Police Warn Northants Residents As Temperatures Soar

Author: James Rudd Published: 9th July 2010 16:47

Chief Constable of NorthantsPolice advice

With many forecasters predicting a long hot summer for 2010 and with soaring temperatures set for the weekend, Northamptonshire Police is urging homeowners to help reduce their own chances of falling victim to crime.

Although household burglary has gone down in the county, officers are asking residents to be conscious of open doors and windows.

Detective Inspector Mark Pattison said: “With the warm weather, people often keep their windows and doors open to keep themselves cool, but this is an open invitation to burglars.

“It’s really important that people keep their doors and windows locked at all times and thoroughly check that they are closed and secured before leaving the house or going to bed at night.

“Many burglaries are carried out on insecure properties. Simple steps can be taken to prevent becoming an easy target.”

  • Keep front and back door locked t all times, even when you are in the house.

  • Fit window locks and keep them locked, especially when you are out.

  • When windows are open to allow air in, particularly in bungalows and on the ground floor.

  • Consider installing and alarm. If you have an alarm use it – even at night.

  • Don’t leave spare keys or car keys lying around inside your house – a burglar could use them to return or steal your car.

  • Don’t leave keys on a windowsill or near a door or window where they can be seen and keep them well away from letterboxes or catflaps.

Witnesses to this incident, or anyone with information, should call Northamptonshire Police on 03000 111 222 - alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
