Two groups of young musicians from Sponne School took part in the prestigious National Festival of Music for Youth in Birmingham in July.

On Wednesday 8th July, “Sponnaissance” performed at the Adrian Boult Hall. Their programme was based around Renaissance Music and Dance, featuring “Though Philomela lost her Love, Spagnoltta, Il est Bel et Bon, Ronde, The Silver Swan, Sing we and Chant it and La Volta”. The students played a consort of crumhorns, sang and danced wearing period costume and despite being rudely interrupted by a mobile phone from the audience, the group showed true professionalism and gave a splendid performance.

The next day, Sponne Brass Band, were on the world famous “Birmingham Symphony Hall” stage performing “The Eye of the Tiger, The Swan, Flight of the Bumble Bee and finished with Pirates of the Caribbean”. The band includes students from all the years at the school, with students ranging in age from 11 to 18 who have been practicing hard for months. The 2 soloists Jonti Smith and Hannah Drage were especially praised by the mentors for their stunning performances.

It is an exceptionally busy time for the Music Department, with performances of the musical “Grease”  at the school  this  week.

In the final week of term, musicians and vocalists will be in Belgium for concerts at Ypres Market Square and later at the Menin Gate nightly service, where a wreath will be laid in memory of former students killed in action. The following day after a tour of Bruges, the bands will perform at the Leopold II Esplanade, De Panne.
Students from several school groups regularly perform at charity and local events (including Midsummer Music  and Armed Forces Day last month)and are building up an excellent reputation for the quality of their performances.

I was at the first performance of "GREASE", last night. Its was a great performance by talented, committed and hardworking students, supported by dedicated staff and helpers. Everyone must have put hours and hours of practice and effort. Well done.. you should be proud of yourselves .... more performances on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. A credit to Sponne School.
