A new report published today throws the spotlight on work being carried out at Northamptonshire County Council to help shape public services in line with the vision and policies set out by the new government.

The last few weeks have seen a raft of announcements by the coalition government aimed at transforming the way public services are delivered and funded in a bid to improve value for money and reduce the national deficit
And in the ‘Our Programme for Change’ paper to be discussed by cabinet tomorrow the council outlines how it is responding to the government’s new direction and how services in the county are among the first in the country being shaped by this new vision.

Its publication comes just weeks after the progress made in Northamptonshire was discussed by cabinet member for strategy, communications and external relations Cllr David Mackintosh with Prime Minister David Cameron at Downing Street and then with Communities Secretary Eric Pickles when he met with Cllr Mackintosh and Cllr Jim Harker.

The report highlights how the council is responding to the government agenda in a number of key areas including, transparency, big community, raising educational achievement and growth and regeneration.
Cllr Mackintosh said: “We have seen so much activity in the past month from the government as it begins in earnest its task to tackle the country’s deficit and transform the way services are run. It is great testament to the work here in Northamptonshire that we are already in a position to be able to publish a paper such as this outlining exactly how we are responding to this.

“Already we have had good discussions with key figures within the government and as this paper clearly shows we are now truly at the forefront of delivering this new vision for public services here in Northamptonshire.
“In addition to this cabinet will also be discussing exactly how June’s emergency budget is impacting the county. Here in Northamptonshire we identified these coming pressures early and through You Choose have already started the discussion about how we as a county can rise to them. The papers being discussed tomorrow show what is already taking place to do so.”
