Today marks the launch of Safer Internet Day (SID) – an annual event to promote the safer use of online technologies by children and young people.
The Force’s Safeguarding Children’s Board is working at a local level with the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre to ensure that members of the public are taking the correct measures to protect children.
The theme for this year is “think before you post”, and is aimed at encouraging children and young people to manage their online identity by using privacy settings on social networking sites, selecting friends online that they can trust, and taking careful consideration of the potential consequences before publishing images of themselves online.
Head of Public Protection, Superintendent Tina Weatherall-Pegley said: “We take this matter seriuosly and it's an issue the local Safeguarding Children Board are aware of. It’s important that we work with other agencies to spread the message and educate both children and adults on the implications online activity can have.
She added: “As a Force, we are determined to make the internet a safer place for children.”
