Elderly pedestrian airlifted to hospital after crash

Published: 22nd July 2008 20:35

An woman was airlifted to hospital after she was hit by a car between Moseley and Kings Heath earlier today.

The air ambulance landed in Swanshurst Park following a number of 999 calls shortly after 3.30pm. A doctor at the scene said the elderly pedestrian had potentially life-threatening injuries.

The accident happened close to the roundabout at the junction of Yardley Wood Road and Coldbath Road and the roads remained closed for several hours.

"A car had been in collision with the couple, who were in their 80s, as they crossed the road just after the roundabout," said West Midlands Ambulance incident support officer Tony Iommi.

"The woman was more seriously injured; she had suspected broken ribs, a number of lacerations to her head and a break to her left arm. She was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital by the helicopter which had landed in Swanhurst Park."

"The man had a broken left leg and was taken by land ambulance to the same hospital for further assessment and treatment after he had been immobilised."

Witness appeal

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident to come forward.

The car involved was a Vauxhall Corsa and it struck the pedestrians as they crossed Swanshurst Road.  A 39 year old man was arrested and bailed pending further investigations.

The elderly couple were both reported to be in a serious, but stable, condition.

Any witnesses are urged to contact the road policing unit at Billesley police station on 0845 113 5000
