Kings Heath's best-known gardener Alys Fowler has been named as one of the region's top 50 green leaders.
The BBCtv presenter was chosen to play a key role in leading us towards a more sustainable future. She recently helped the Kings Heath bid to win a Britain in Bloom title and has been supporting the gardening efforts of Fox Hollies School.
Sustainability West Midlands with partners the Lunar Society, Defra, Advantage West Midlands and Common Purpose ran a competition to identify the individuals. They each then received certificates from Jonathon Porritt at an event to exchange ideas and discuss what outcomes would be possible from being part of this group over the next year.
Alys Fowler, who lives around the corner from Kings Heath Park is the head gardener for BBC Gardeners World and has a TV series the ‘edible gardener' based on her garden and community work in Birmingham.
In her programme Alys explores the possibilities and limitations of community self-sustainability in the urban environment of South Birmingham. In presenting her with the green leadership award, Sustainability West Midlands says she has "inspired a range of people to live lower impact lifestyles through community gardening, and growing food as part of a small garden."
