Falklands Conflict Talk by Fleet Submarine Staff Officer Jeff Tall

Thirty years on, former Falklands Task Group Submarine Staff Officer Commander Jeff Tall OBE will be giving a personal perspective on the conflict in an evening talk at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, in Gosport, Hampshire on Thursday 21 June at 7pm.

From his unique personal standpoint, serving under Admiral Sandy Woodward onboard HMS Hermes, Commander Tall will speak about the decisions that were taken to ensure victory at the last major naval war of the 20th century.

Commander Jeff Tall OBE said, "The Falklands war was a close run thing.  With no early warning aircraft, improvisation and extreme courage were the order of the day"

Commander Tall was a submariner for 28 years, serving all over the world. As well as serving in the Falklands Conflict, during his Royal Navy career he commanded four submarines during the Cold War, two diesel driven patrol submarines HMS Olympus and Finwhale; a nuclear powered Fleet submarine HMS Churchill and the nuclear powered Polaris Missile submarine HMS Repulse. After he retired from the Royal Navy in 1994, he was Director of the RN Submarine Museum until 2008. He has written a number of books, makes regular appearances on radio and TV and is a regular lecturer on Cruise Liners.

The talk is part of a season of Third Thursday Talks to raise money for the Saving HMS Alliance ampaign. HMS Alliance is currently undergoing a major £6.75m conservation programme which has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  Funds raised total £6.5m, including a £3.4m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, leaving a further £250,000 left to raise.

This event is also part of a season of activities to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict which includes Falklands 30 -War patrols, a new photographic exhibition at the Submarine Museum and a Facebook day by day account of the Falklands Conflict which has been compiled in partnership with the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

Tickets for the Falklands Talk on 21 June are £8 and available online from www.submarine-museum.co.uk  or by calling 023 92510 354 ext 240.  The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is open every day and the Falklands 30 exhibition will run until November.
