The idea to enter the Race for Life in Trent Park on Sunday 17th June 2012 came from one of our lady members, not aware of any individual with a personal problem, past or present, that triggered it, but the 'Anyone Interested?' notice on the board at Waltham Holy Cross Conservative Club produced an astonishing result with 57 ladies signing up to the 5k challenge.
The club ladies participating, covering a very wide age range, each raising whatever sponsorship they can from friends, colleagues and neighbours. The girls have opted for a pink theme (not surprising) and decided to call themselves "Olly's Army" in honour of Mr Derek 'Olly' Cowley, one of the most popular of Waltham Abbey's residents and a proud member of our club and former Opportunity Knocks Winner. Each has agreed to buy a pink top in one of two styles, emblazoned with the team's adopted name.
Our team Ollys-Army role of honour are: Danielle, Jackie, Simmone, Julie B, Katie B, Sandy , Leigh, Lyn , Vicky, Julie C, Lil , Becky, Karen, Rachel D, Lorraine D, Gill, Sue D, Anne, Callie, Diane, Sue F, Claire, Monica, Rachel H, Katie H, Kathy, Hannah, Jenni, Linda K, Lucy, Tina, Kirsty, Jenny, Valerie, Doreen, Linda, Maxine N, Trish, Maxine O, Michell, Nicky, Stacey, Carol, Anita, Gemma, Jill, Sharon, Lorraine S, Trudy, Sue S, Julie S, Rita, Keeley, Jane, Lacey, Rhea, and Marion

Mrs Eleanor Laing MP for Epping Forest was invited to join them, while visiting the Club a few weeks ago, but she told them it was unfortunately not possible for her to be there on the day, but wished everyone every success with both fund-raising and to the participates whether they were walking, jogging or running the Race for Life and asked to kept informed of progress.
On returning to the Clubhouse after the event, there will be a buffet for all involved and a raffle with most of the prizes donated by the race participants themselves to raise additional money.
A large cheque (courtesy of HSBC) has been arranged for the presentation once the total funds raised have been collected.
Gary Willis, Entertainments Chairman at WHXCC told AboutMyArea/EN9: "From the very first suggestion onwards, they have been enthusiastic, magnificent, thorough and devoted to it. I am immensely proud of them. It is nigh on impossible to guestimate the total that will be raised, but I am beginning to hope that we may even reach £5,000, we know one lady has been sponsored £1,000 already! Olly's Army and the Club members are getting very excited about it".
