The Rowans Hospice has announed the opening of registration for the brand new cycle challenge event, The Ruby Ride, on Wednesday 20 June at 12 noon. To help launch this new event, cyclists from local business Wiggle will be cycling up to the Hospice in Purbrook Heath Road, Purbrook.
Portsmouth based online cycling retailer, Wiggle, have confirmed not only their support towards The Ruby Ride but their support for The Rowans Hospice over the next 12 months as the result of their employees nominating The Rowans Hospice as their Charity of Choice.
The Ruby Ride takes place on Sunday 30 September starting from Lakeside, North Harbour and participants can choose from four routes according to their ability and level of fitness. There is a family friendly 3.5 mile ‘Fun' route on cycle paths to the Mountbatten Centre and back again. There is an 18 mile ‘Leisure' route around the whole of Portsea Island. The ‘Challenge' route is approximately 30 miles and includes Portsdown Hill and for those looking to really go the extra mile there is the ‘Epic' 60 mile route up to Petersfield and returning through the Meon Valley.
The first person to sign up will be Julie Applin who is keen to raise sponsorship for The Rowans Hospice following the death of her mum on 11th February this year. "Mum died peacefully during the night at the Hospice with my brother was by her side," Julie explains. "All my family drew enormous comfort from knowing mum was in the care of true professionals. That's why I will be riding for The Rowans Hospice in their new fundraising event, The Ruby Ride, on 30th September. I would like to encourage as many people as possible to join me, whether you are keen cyclist or not. Help me support the wonderful work of The Rowans Hospice."
Ali Corbett, Events Fundraiser and organiser of The Ruby Ride, said: "We are so excited that Wiggle has chosen us as their charity for the next year and also that they are involved with this new event. We're hoping that the community will get on their bikes and raise money to provide vital hospice care for families in the same situation as Julie's. With the wide choice of routes for cyclists, everyone can join in with this challenge."
Registration forms are available from The Rowans Hospice reception and shops, telephone 023 9223 7142 or email email@example.com or visit www.rowanshospice.co.uk. It costs £15 for adults and £7.50 for children aged 5-16 years (children under 5 free) which includes a T-shirt, refreshments and a medal on completion for all paying participants. On registration, The Rowans Hospice will provide a sponsorship pack. Every £1 of sponsorship is important and will help to provide services and care for people, like Julie's mum, in Portsmouth and Southeast Hampshire with a life-limiting illness.
