Jade Thompson and Tom Stanford with their awards.
Two students from Milton Keynes College have won top honours at the British Colleges Sport (BCS) and Association of Colleges Student of the Year Awards.
Star badminton player, Tom Stanford, was named best male sporting performance of 2012 while all-rounder Jade Thompson has been selected for best female in the leadership and volunteering category.
Jade says, "It is such an honour to win this award. When you volunteer for things you really don't expect this kind of recognition. I owe to my leadership coaches as they are the ones who provided me with the opportunities to gain the experience and skills which led me to win the award."
Milton Keynes College Sports Development Manager, Ollie Jordan, says, "Jade has been a fantastic advert for both herself and Milton Keynes College since joining in September 2010. She is very creative and has fantastic leadership skills and is always the first person to volunteer for something new. She's always at the forefront of events organised by the Leadership Academy, notably the London 2012-inspried Flames project. She's never afraid to look outside the college for schemes to which she can contribute and has thrown herself into the Sport Relief Mile, Primary School Disability Events, Council Holiday Playschemes and so on."
"Tom is a genuine British sports star in the making. As an elite badminton performer he's been the cornerstone of our team which came fifth in the National College finals. He's already playing for a team in the German third division which is an incredibly high standard and he's ranked fifty-sixth in UK men's singles and a hundred and twenty-third in doubles. He won the British Sports Colleges national title this year, but with Tom it's never all about him because he's always willing to spend time on court with other players helping them to improve."
Tom added, "This award is the icing on the cake to a wonderful year for me. I had to come back from injury in January and put a lot into my training to win the BCS National Singles title and this feels like wonderful recognition for that."
The students are just two examples of the kinds of success which are boosting Milton Keynes College's reputation in delivering winning ways on the pitch or court alongside academic excellence in a variety of sports science qualifications. The college runs sports academies in a wide range of elite sports squads including Basketball, Football, Badminton, Rugby and Netball. It is the envy of other colleges for a number of significant link-ups with outside sporting bodies, including MK Lions Basketball.
The Leadership Academy which supported Jade is also a partnership, set up and run in conjunction with Milton Keynes Council Sports Development Unit.
Jade and Tom were presented with their awards at a Gala Dinner at the Aston Business School in Birmingham on Thursday 21st. June. For more information on sports teams and courses at Milton Keynes College please contact email@example.com
