Finding the perfect life at Arc
I found out how at the Arc Theatre, Barking last night when I saw their production of Stephen K Patterson's Guide to a Perfect Life
The hard-hitting, fast-paced play was expertly performed by actors; Joe Woolmer, Janet Behan, Ria Knowles and Phoebe Oliver.
Written by Clifford Oliver and directed by Andy Rogers, the presentation engaged directly with young people in its no-holds barred portrayal of life as it really is. Yet it did not dwell on the injustices and prejudices of life - rather it showed the reasons why they happen, and suggested ways of overcoming them rather than rebelling against them.
The play also looked at the consequences that arise from our actions, and promoted viable strategies for dealing with situations.
The excellent performance finished with a discussion amongst the actors and audience about the issues that were covered. Many of the young people contributed to the discussion and some very good points were raised. One was that, "It was good that facilities were provided to encourage sport and performing arts - but what was there for young people who did not fall into either of these two interest groups?"
Another observed that, "When something is forbidden; that makes it all the more exciting to do!" And finding a solution to that is what takes us on a journey to find if not the perfect life, then at least a contented one.
The Arc Theatre is looking for anyone over sixteen who likes drama, wants to make new friends and would like to take part in the creation of a brand new story about Barking and Dagenham. They must live, work or study in the borough.
