CALNE MARKET HISTORY
It is thought that a general market was held on The Green as early as the 14th century. Records show that permission was granted to the treasurer of Salisbury Cathedral, as owner of the Prebendal estate, to hold a market.
A general market was held on a Saturday at The Strand, from the 1920's. This was then moved to The Wharf, but unfortunately the market had been discontinued by the 1950's.
The market was revived in the 1960's, being held on a Friday, remaining at The Wharf until 1973 when the market was moved to The Pippin.
In the 1980's Calne market was one of the busiest and most popular in the area, in the days when there was no Sunday trading and Friday was the day to purchase your weekly shop. Calne market had a wide variety of stalls, fruit & vegetables, household essentials, carpets, darts, shoes, ladies & children fashions to name but a few, you didn't need to travel to neighbouring towns.
