Choose who to vote for

Published: 24th April 2007 23:41

We approached each of the three candidates standing for election in Cowley Hill Ward and invited them to submit a statement of up to 300 words explaining why they think you should vote for them. These statements are reproduced (unedited) below in alphabetical order of the candidate’s surname.

Butler, Ernie
Labour

Ernie has been an active member of the local community for many years and has served as a local borough and town councillor; moreover he had the privilege of serving as the Town Mayor in 2002/03.

He has lived in Borehamwood for 22 years and resides in the Cowley Hill ward, married with 4 children and 2 grand-children. For many years he was an active school governor at the former Hawksmoor School, and Meryfield School. As an active member of the local crime reduction group he has campaigned for more police on the streets and greater local station resource and opening times to liaise with the local community. He is a volunteer at the Community Shop in Leeming Road and has helped local young people with their housing problems; furthermore, as the Town Councils representative to the Youth Council he has pursued more active youth involvement in the community.

Other issues he feels deserve more attention at Council level are Day-Care facilities for the elderly and the ill –conceived rubbish collection and recycling procedures; on the former he would like to include computer awareness training for older residents on the latter proper collections and more sanitary measures for storage of rubbish at home.

He like many others feels local residents are paying too much Council Tax under this Conservative Council and are not getting value for money or quality of service.

Dry, Jim
Socialist Labour

Gellatly, Alan
Conservative

I have lived in Borehamwood for over 28 years. I am a local coordinator for the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and have always taken an interest in the local political scene over the years, with special emphasis on issues such as social care and transport, issues which affect the most senior member of our community. I believe that I have a sound overall grasp of the problems and difficulties which are of the greatest concern to the residents of Cowley Hill ward.

If elected, I undertake to perform my duties with due care and attention and in an impartial and responsible way.

My pledge is to always be helpful and accessible to all electors.

This site is not promoting any individual candidate or party. The AboutMyArea local site editor approached all the candidates nominated in the listed wards and asked them to submit a 300 word statement. All were approached equally and given the same deadline. Where indicated, no statement was received by the initial deadline of midnight Tuesday 24 April 2007. The site may be updated periodically where late submissions are received. The text of all statements is reproduced exactly as submitted by the candidate or their agent and AboutMyArea is not responsible for the content of the candidate statements. Any statements over the 300-word limit have been cut at the end of the last complete sentence preceeding the word limit.
