Choose who to vote for

Published: 24th April 2007 23:42

We approached each of the two candidates standing for election in Elstree Ward and invited them to submit a statement of up to 300 words explaining why they think you should vote for them. These statements are reproduced (unedited) below in alphabetical order of the candidate’s surname.

Bright, Morris
Conservative

Morris Bright lives locally with his wife Kirsty and two children and has been a resident of Elstree and Borehamwood for 18 years. Morris was first elected as a Councillor for Elstree in 1999 and also became a town councillor for the ward in 2003. Morris has sat on all the major committees of the Council and has been a member of the Executive since its inception. As Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Morris Bright introduced Police Community Support Officers to our towns as well as the Alcohol-Free Zone in Borehamwood.

Keen on the environment, Morris also oversaw the introduction of green bins for the recycling of garden waste, kitchen waste and cardboard - and a doubling of recycling figures in just one year. He is currently in charge of property matters for the Borough including the building of the new Community Theatre in Borehamwood as well as overseeing the council’s biggest asset, Elstree Film Studios, of which he is the Chairman.

As an Elstree local councillor for the past eight years, Morris Bright has fought hard against Government plans to impose new housing quotas on the area, which would see precious green belt land destroyed. He has always tried to be at the other end of the phone or e-mail for any residents with any problem and has been proud to serve the area for two full terms of office.

Away from the Council, Morris Bright is a freelance producer and author, who has just finished his tenth book. Based at Pinewood Studios, Morris makes regular appearances on both radio and television.

Sandle, Tim
Labour

I am a democratic socialist and I work as a pharmaceutical microbiologist in the NHS. I previously served as on Hertsmere Borough Council 1995 and 2004. During my time on the council I was chairman of the Park Committee and I was a Director of Elstree Film Studios.

Would like to be elected so that I can seek improvements for Borehamwood and for Elstree Ward. Hertsmere Council is presently controlled by the Conservatives. During their time in power, the Tories pushed through a range of cuts from cutting back on refuse collection to hiking up leisure centre prices. These are some of the reasons why a Labour voice on the Council is important.

If elected I will fight to resist any developments on green spaces (like Parkfields); continue to support elderly persons groups, community halls and youth activities; to seek further improvements to the roads and pavements; to listen to resident’s views on traffic calming, street lighting and community safety, and to seek further social and economic improvements through community partnership and the initiative like credit unions.

I can sympathise with those who are disillusioned with the Labour Government. Hard-working local Labour representatives are not responsible for the unpopular policies the government is pursuing. They are doing a great job providing high quality services for local people in Hertsmere.

If you agree with me on any of these issues the n you need a Labour voice for Elstree Ward. Please find time to spend a few minutes and cast your vote.

The AboutMyArea local site editor approached all the candidates nominated in the listed wards and asked them to submit a 300 word statement. All were approached equally and given the same deadline. Where indicated, no statement was received by the initial deadline of midnight Tuesday 24 April 2007. The site may be updated periodically where late submissions are received. The text of all statements is reproduced exactly as submitted by the candidate or their agent and AboutMyArea is not responsible for the content of the candidate statements.
