Abacare welcomes news that young are keen on care

Published: 21st October 2019 15:27

AN AWARD-WINNING care provider is looking to attract more under 30s into the industry in Wales after a recent report revealed the young are most likely to consider a social care career (October, 2019).

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) recently surveyed 2,020 people in England and found half of people aged 18-24 (57%) and 25-34 (56%) would consider changing career for a position that supported others.

Peter Angelides, Managing Director at Abacare, which has offices in Bangor and provides care in the surrounding areas, said: “We feel younger people have a great deal to offer the care sector and we want to recruit kind, caring and honest youngsters into our teams today.

“Care represents a good, solid and secure career with training and advancement prospects for life as we have an ageing population who will need looking after, which means an additional 580,000 workers are required by the industry by 2035.”

The survey is part of the next phase of the department’s ‘When you care, every day makes a difference’ adult social care recruitment campaign, which aims to attract people into the sector.

Minister for Care, Caroline Dinenage, said: “We have over a million brilliant people working in the sector, but we urgently need new talent to ensure we can continue to provide support for those who need it.”

The average age of those working in adult social care is 45-years-old, and around 385,000 jobs are held by people aged 55 who are likely to retire in the next ten years.

The analysis also found 59% would consider moving roles to a job which offers more personal fulfilment and 65% of parents with dependent children would consider a role in adult social care.

Peter added: “Millennials are often given a hard time and have a bad reputation when it comes to work. They are often labelled as being self-centred and workshy, so it’s fantastic to hear that many of them are keen to pursue a caring role. We welcome people of all ages to apply for our positions but would encourage any young people out there considering giving care work a go, to get in touch now as we have vacancies to fill today and we provide all the on-the-job training necessary.

“Our free, full training includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) after the initial three months probationary period.

“New recruits are given free uniforms, access to an attractive national staff discount scheme for all major brands including tech brands and high street retailers including including Tesco, Boots and Argos, as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone wishing to have a stable and long-term career in care, and who would like to forge rewarding relationships with the service users they care for. We can also offer flexibility if people would like to work around their studies.”

Abacare is one of a growing list of care providers coming together to help recruit 20,000 carers in Wales by 2030 as part of the WeCare Wales campaign.

The campaign is a collaboration with Social Care Wales and leading organisations representing social care, early years and childcare in Wales, as well as other national bodies involved in job-seeking and careers advice.

It is part of a long-term strategy to develop the workforces in the care and health sectors over the next decade, to provide a high-quality, seamless service to the people of Wales.

The campaign will highlight the breadth of career opportunities in care, from childminders and nursery practitioners to home care co-ordinators and care home managers.

The WeCare campaign aims to show the variety of roles and career progression opportunities available. By using real care workers, the campaign focuses on the challenges they face, as well as what makes their work rewarding and worthwhile.

Peter added: “Being a carer is a highly skilled, professional vocational occupation that is essential to the fabric of our society and the beauty of a job for life means people can start by training with us and work their way up the career ladder gaining further training and qualifications. In today’s changing world of employment, we pride ourselves on being able to offer long-term job security and career prospects.
