Bristol Concert Orchestra play Beethoven's 5th, Liszt & Debussy

Published: 13th March 2015 10:14

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is the main work at Bristol Concert Orchestra's upcoming concert this Saturday 14th March - the opening notes of which are perhaps the most famous in all classical music - but there is so much more to follow in this thrilling work. As author E.M. Forster put it 'the most sublime noise that has ever penetrated into the ear of man.'

Before that, the concert opens with a musical journey to Spain, courtesy of Debussy, whose vivid musical depiction of the sights, sounds and scents of Spain was all the more remarkable given he had made only one fleeting visit to the country, but led to Spainsh composer Manuel de Falla declaring that Debussy had taught Spanish composers how to write Spanish music!

Completing the first half of the concert, Liszt's dazzling 1st Piano Concerto with renowned soloist Ashley Wass - described by Gramophone Magazine as a 'thoroughbred who possesses the enviable gift to turn almost anything he plays into pure gold', Ashley is firmly established as one of the leading pianists of his generation. He has made numerous CD recordings, performed extensively worldwide and is frequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3 & Classic FM.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of Bristol Child Contact Centre - a Henleaze-based charity which provides a safe and friendly place for children to meet separated parents and family where contact may otherwise be difficult.

The concert on Saturday 14th March at St George's Bristol starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available from St George's Bristol box office in person, by phone (0845 40 24 001) or online (www.stgeorgesbristol.co.uk).
