Mahler Symphony 5, Delius and Tchaikovsky at St George's Bristol

Published: 1st December 2012 10:46

A piece of Christmas courtesy of Delius, a Tchaikovsky work in its rare original form and Mahler's 5th Symphony form the content of Bristol's longest-established orchestra's winter-warmer concert taking place at St George's Bristol on Saturday 8 December at 7.30pm.

Bristol Concert Orchestra opens its concert with a seasonal touch with Sleigh Ride (Winter Night) by Delius. 2012 marks 150 years since that English composer's birth, so it is quite fitting to see out this year with his charming tone poem that immediately evokes seasonal images with the jingle of sleigh bells, and a work that is instantly recognisable from TV adverts of recent years.

Virtuoso cellist Joseph Spooner will be in the spotlight for the second work of the evening: Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme - to be heard in the composer's rarely-performed original version. The more commonly-known version is actually one amended by Wilhem Fitzhagen (who commissioned and first performed the work). Somehow, the altered version is the one that made it into publication - much to the anger of Tchaikovsky - and to this day is the version most often heard, so this will be a rare opportunity to hear the work as the composer intended.

The main work of the evening will be Mahler's 5th Symphony - perhaps that composer's most-loved symphony, an emotional and virtuosic juggernaut complete with the sublime 'Adagietto' famously used in the film 'Death in Venice'.

As is customary at Bristol Concert Orchestra concerts, conductor Stefan Hofkes will preface each work in his inimitable informative and amusing introductions.

At the end of the concert, there will be a retiring collection in aid of Parkinson's UK.

Tickets are priced £8-£15 (£6-£13 for concessions and children £1). See www.bristolconcertorchestra.org.uk or St George's Bristol (0845 40 24 001) for more information and to book tickets.
