Taunton Leisure – Bristol to support Avon Wildlife Trust in 2019/20

Published: 3rd May 2019 10:59

STAFF at an outdoor pursuits clothing and equipment store in Bristol have chosen for the coming 12 months to support a charity that protects wildlife in the West of England area (May 2019).

Bedminster-based Taunton Leisure – Bristol has selected Avon Wildlife Trust (AWT) as its charity of the year and will be helping raise funds and awareness for it, including participating in its 30 Days Wild event in June.

Braam Van Der Walt, Store Manager at Taunton Leisure – Bristol, said: “We’re delighted to announce that we’ve selected AWT as our charity for 2019/2020.

“The charity undertakes invaluable work, caring for nature reserves, from ancient bluebell woods to Iron Age forts, nationally important wetlands, and wildflower meadows. It also runs award-winning educational and community programmes, as well as working with landowners in the wider countryside, to reduce the decline in wildlife by creating a living landscape.”

AWT is the largest charity working to protect wildlife in the West of England area, formerly the County of Avon – Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

“Throughout the year we’ll be raising awareness of the wonderful work it does and, also, raising funds. We will have donation boxes, as well as regular volunteers in-store to sign interested people up to join AWT for a monthly donation.”

AWT is part of The Wildlife Trust movement. There are 47 independent Wildlife Trusts across the whole of the UK, the Isle of Man and Alderney. With 825,000 members, The Wildlife Trusts are the largest UK voluntary organisation dedicated to conserving the whole range of the UK’s habitats and species on land and at sea.

Each Wildlife Trust is an independent charity, which is deeply-rooted within the communities where it was formed. AWT was established in 1980 as one of the first urban Trusts in the country.

It leads conservation work by taking an innovative approach to wildlife recovery on a landscape scale, to increase biodiversity in the wider environment. It wants to inspire people about the natural world so that they value it, understand their relationship with it and take action to protect and restore it.

Calum Edser, a spokesperson for AWT, said: “It’s wonderful we’ve been chosen as Taunton Leisure – Bristol’s charity of the year for the next 12 months.

“We are excited to be working with such a well-respected local business who can also help to raise awareness of the activities and services we provide.”

One of the initiatives Braam and the team at Taunton Leisure – Bristol will be getting involved with is AWT’s 30 Days Wild 2019 in June, which is a family orientated campaign aimed at encouraging people to do 30 simple, fun and exciting Random Acts of Wildness.

Braam added: “We’ll be participating in maintenance work in the reserves, as well as collecting rubbish in the Avon Gorge. We will be going for a walk on the Mendip Hills after work and doing a few runs in Leigh Woods and the Black Mountains, so that we can help raise awareness with our customers of the work of the AWT and other Wildlife Trusts not far from us.”
