Spring into action and check your vehicle

SOMERSET folk are being advised by a car care and motorcycle maintenance company in the county to check their vehicles are in a roadworthy condition next month (March 2019).
Autoserv Car & Bike in Weston-super-Mare is encouraging people to inspect their cars for any damage that has been caused during winter and is offering free advice on the topic.
Steve White, Director of the business, which is on Pottery Close, explained: "At the start of a new season it is always a good idea to check vehicles for any wear and tear that has been caused throughout the previous months.
"Warmer, drier weather means many drivers are likely to be making longer journeys, so it is essential to ensure that your car is in a safe and roadworthy condition.
"By doing these checks now could also save money as even minor problems could end up being very costly to fix if left."
Autoserv Car & Bike recommends you check the following on your vehicle:
1. Get your air conditioning serviced. If the air smells stale when you turn your air conditioning on it could be a sign that mould is building up in your condenser. Regular servicing will help to prevent this from happening.
2. Keep your washer fluid topped up. During dry spells there can be a lot more dust and insects around so keeping your washer fluid topped up means you can clear your windscreen effectively.
3. Check your wiper blades and replace them if necessary. The rubber on wiper blades can harden or become damaged, which means they won't clear the windscreen properly. Worn out blades can also create marks on the windscreen.
4. It is really important to check your wheel and tyre alignment particularly after such a wet winter, which may have caused road damage. Tyres that are misaligned will wear out quicker.
5. Check your tyre tread. Wet weather changes the chemical composition of tyres and makes them more susceptible to punctures so worn tyres with little or no tread will always provide a greater risk. European Union law requires a minimum of 1.6 millimetre (mm) of tread across three quarters of the width of the tyre.
