Discover an exciting new way of exploring the Lee Valley

Earlier this year, Discover Explore launched its brand new exploration game in Scotland's Great Glen.  In July, the team introduced another 10 heritage locations across South East England's Lee Valley to the game.

These 10 locations can now be enjoyed in a new and exciting way. Would-be young explorers go on-line at http://www.discoverexplore.co.uk/ choose locations, download unique explorer packs and then head off on adventurous missions with their families or school groups.  Explorers can earn rewards in the form of badges by correctly answering questions about the missions online. There's a whole range of badges to aim for.

Discover Explore challenges families and young people to take part in missions that get them out exploring. Missions in the Lee Valley include plotting the plants and designing a garden at Myddelton House Gardens, investigating the inner workings of The House Mill on Three Mills Island, discovering amazing inventions and their inventors at Bruce Castle Museum, exploring a church fit for a king and running the Rose Garden relay at Waltham Abbey & Gardens, spotting birds and bugs at Rye Meads Nature Reserve and helping Tom the apprentice navigate his way around the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield on his first day.

Heritage enthusiast Griff Rhys-Jones described the Lea as "the most fascinating river in Britain" and loves the area. He is keen to encourage others to share his experiences of the Lee Valley through Discover Explore: "The history of the river is amazing. It's been an industrial thoroughfare, an open sewer and a gateway to the capital. It's now a haven for wildlife, a des-res for people and a popular leisure destination. And, of course, an Olympic centre.  I hope families use this opportunity to visit the area, try out the missions from Discover Explore and enjoy everything the wonderful Lee Valley has to offer."

Claire Horan, Project Manager for Discovering Places and Discover Explore adds: "Discover Explore aims to tell the story of the Lee Valley by getting young people out investigating it for themselves. We're delighted that the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and other partners are joining with us to help reveal their locations to new eyes."

The Royal Gunpowder Mills in Waltham Abbey has recently joined in too with a Secret Island Scientist Mission, so remember to check out the Discover Explore website before you visit this summer for an even more exciting local day out.  This fascinating site is open every day of the summer holidays with their new Test the Senses Mad Lab Experiments show: http://www.royalgunpowdermills.com/

Discover Explore is part of Discovering Places, the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad campaign, to inspire communities across the UK to discover their local built,  historic and natural environment for more information please go to: http://www.discoverexplore.co.uk/

The sun is shining so what's stopping you and your family joining the adventure.....are you ready to discover extraordinary stories, are you brave enough to complete missions that uncover hidden histories and seek out incredible places and wildlife to win some "super-duper" badges?

We would love to hear from families who have enjoyed the Discover Explore initiative, registered users can comment  below or email your experience story and a photo to jeffen9@aboutmyarea.co.uk
