BEESTON VILLAGE NEWS & EVENTS
WE 10 DECEMBER 2010

 BIRD RINGING
Only 44 more birds are needed to make the grand total of 2,000 birds ringed in the garden at Cos Lodge.  The next bird ringing is this Sunday, December 12 from 9am at Cos Lodge, when Derek Gruar will be back in action with his festive bag, looking for seasonal robins.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  It is such a wonderful opportunity to see both familiar and less common garden birds at close quarters and invaluable data is logged on the health and welfare of birds in our area.

 TASK TEAM
Join the Task Team on Saturday, December 11 and go into the festive season with a clear conscience.  All volunteers and all levels of ability will be welcomed and catered for giving the village a cared-for appearance.  New volunteers are always welcomed.  Meet at 10:00 onwards, at Cos Lodge or on the Green.  The job in hand will be the pond in the centre of the Green, known affectionately as ‘Bryan's Bayou' and the surrounding area near 18, The Green on the Green.  Litter will be cleared and rank vegetation will be removed, leaving it a suitable location for nesting moorhens in the spring.  The osiers will be pruned, and the resulting bundles stored for future use.  Please contact Bryan Bourne on 01767 681421 for details.  When the valiant Task Team were in action on November 29, 2008 it was one of the coldest mornings they have ever met, but they achieved a fine job with the pond in the centre of the Green.  It looked managed and cared for.

 BEESTON HERITAGE ADVENTURE
There are still some copies of the ‘Dressing Beeston' booklet for sale from Poppy Cope at Cos Lodge, priced £3.95.  The booklet was produced earlier in the year by the Heritage Adventure and it makes excellent stocking filler for Christmas.  In it talented local artist, Gill Holt, and Poppy Cope combined to link the period costume of the day with events in Beeston at the time, and in the rest of the world.  Gill researched the costumes and then placed them in familiar Beeston settings, so there are early people in the fields in animal skins, Romans in togas, Normans ploughing the land, Tudors outside Elm Farm, Victorians outside Rose Cottage and the Recreation Room, Edwardians near Daisy Bank.  The book continues right up to modern times and Gill has enlivened her drawings with her own comments.  Irene Tilney has beautifully painted the illustrations in her copy of "Dressing Beeston" proving it is a book for all ages.

Many thanks to Alan Richardson, Ken Page Rex Skinner and Poppy Cope for manning the Heritage Adventure exhibition at the Christmas Bazaar in Methodist Church over last weekend.  The church was beautifully decorated and it was great to be a part of the festive tradition in the village.  Some lively conversation ensued with items of debate!  Many names were added to photographs.  It is essential to get them named and dated and this will become a feature of HA displays in the future.

WILDLIFE GROUP
A flock of goldfinch were eagerly plucking teasel seeds from the plants in the Meadow on Monday morning, which amply justified the presence of the teasels.  There is still a heavy crop of hawthorn, sloe, buckthorn, ivy spindle and mistletoe berries in the area for hungry birds to enjoy, and fieldfares were feasting in Phyllis' Copse on hawthorn berries.  The popular mulled wine walk will be on Saturday, January 15.  Mulled wine will be served from 21, The Green, at 11.00am and will be followed by a walk from Beeston to the Sand Hills.  It will last just over an hour.  Then lunch will be served at the China Express restaurant in Sandy at 12.45.  If you wish to take part in the walk and/or just the lunch, please let Ros Hill know on 681469.  If you live in Sandy you can join the walk at the Mill Race.  Two grey lag geese hit overhead wires when landing in Beeston fields last week and died.

MATTERS DISCUSSED
In response to matters raised at the meeting of Finance and General Purposes Committee of Sandy Town Council on Monday November 29 the Highways Agency did not consider there would be an issue with increased traffic on the trunk road at the junction with New Road to the proposed .new Tesco store neither do they feel the need to look at speed limits on the A1 again.  The planning documents of the new Tesco store are in STC offices in Cambridge Road if anyone wishes to look at them Tesco have done traffic surveys that indicate there will not be an increase in traffic. Central Bedfordshire will not be supplying sandbags to local councils or residents in the future. They will be supplying inflatable sandbags to the fire service instead.

METHODISTS
Good fellowship and friendliness permeated our Christmas Festival weekend. We gave a warm welcome to Jayne Whiteman and her family  who had travelled from the far reaches of Ipswich to lead our worship on Sunday. Sonia Butler gave the call to worship and the ladies choir sang "The Holly and the Ivy" accompanied on the organ by Roger Ward. The second candle was lit in the Advent crown, the second one representing the prophets as the first one represents the patriachs. Jayne explained that Advent is taken from the latin Adventus and means coming and the bible readings reflected this message.

Alan Richardson read from Isiaah, Chapter 11 - "The branch from Jesse" and Angela Earl gave the reading from Matthew's gospel Chapter 3 - "John the baptist prepares the way". Both readings foretold the coming of Christ and spoke about preparing our lives for God to come in. John preached in the wilderness and we can often find ourselves in our own wilderness and still living in the past and can feel empty inside and that is when we need God to fill the void for us. We must be prepared for His coming.

Mary Millar led the prayers of intercession. Next week there will be no morning service and the Carol service led by Mary Millar, will take place at 2.30pm followed by a cup of tea/coffee, all welcome. Sunday afternoon we had a favourite carols service, those requesting carols were Angela, Vivien, Julie, Rosemary, Maureen, Les, Gladys, Tricia, Mary, Molly, Eileen and another Rosemary. Carols included "God rest ye merry gentlemen", "We three kings of Orient are" with verses sung by Maureen, Molly and Angela, "Silent Night", "Hark the herald angels sing" and "See him lying on a bed of straw" to name just a few. The ladies choir sang "Let there be peace on earth" accompanied again by Roger.

The bazaar on Saturday was very well supported and the stall holders and the ladies in the kitchen were kept very busy. The arrangements in church with the theme of "Sing a song of Christmas" were admired greatly. These were as follows: "Blue Christmas" arranged by Rosemary Blain, "Rocking around the Christmas tree" by LInda Tolley, "The Christmas song" arranged by Phyllis Horn, "Winter Wonderland" by Marianne Attfield, "Mistletoe and Wine" by Kathleen Ambrose, " Christmas Alphabet" and "Santa Claus is coming to town" by Vivien Atkins and Angela Earl, "Silver Bells" and "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" by Julie Leonard and Molly Lincoln, "An old Christmas card" by Maureen Halfacree who also did "When Santa got stuck up the chimney".

The Snowman's birthday was won by Wilf Mitchell and name the teddy bear was won by Angela Earl, with the name of George. Raffle prizewinners were Julie Larman, Alan Richardson, Eileen Randall, Rosemary Blain, Marianne Attfield, Agnes Stock, Angela Earl, Poppy Cope, Betty Ambrose, Chris and Mac, Tina, Mrs Benneton, Vivien Atkins, Mrs Standbridge, Maisie Smith and Molly Lincoln. Thanks to everyone who made the weekend such an enjoyable success. Youth club meets on Friday 10 December at 7.30pm.

Lastly congratulations to Angela Earl who has become a grandma for the first time, her daughter-in-law Becky gave birth to a baby boy, George Stanley on 30 November and the proud dad is Angela's son Chris Earl, love to all.
