Family meals and "work experience" celebrate School Meals Week

Reading schools are serving up a feast of food and fun to celebrate National School Meals Week.
On three evenings next week, families at three of the borough's schools will have the chance to share a meal prepared by Reading Borough Council's school meal service working in partnership with Chartwells, the council's school meals contractor. 
On Tuesday, November 10, from 5pm to 7pm, catering staff at Ranikhet Primary School will serve up a choice of roast beef, chicken or lamb, and a vegetarian option followed by apple pie and custard.
On Wednesday evening, from 5pm to 7pm, the dining room at George Palmer Primary School - a Food for Life Flagship School - will throw open its doors to serve the same menu to its families.
On Friday evening, Oxford Road Primary School will hold a similar event from 5pm to 7pm in their newly redecorated dining room with its colourful hand-painted mural.
The two-course meal will be on offer at £2.20 per adult and £1.85 per child.
School Meals Week will also see key managers of Reading Borough Council's school meals service trying their hands at cookery by spending a day as school cooks, in an unusual "work experience" exercise called 'Back to The Floor'.
On Monday, November 9, Gabrielle Hepworth a manager in the council's school meals service, will be cooking at Manor Primary School.
On Tuesday, Colin McIntosh, head of the council's school meals service, will be demonstrating his skills as a chef at Wilson Primary School.
On Wednesday, Sallyann Windmill, Chartwells school meals contract manager for Reading, will cook at Ranikhet Primary School.
On Thursday, Carol Griffiths, Chartwells school meals area manager, will cook at Blagdon Nursery and Children's Centre.
On Friday, Sandra Kerton, operations performance leader with Chartwell, will cook at Caversham Park Primary School.
Jon Hartley, Lead Councillor for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: "I'm delighted to see our excellent school meals service celebrating School Meals Week in such an imaginative way. The family meal idea is a great way for parents to sample a school meal with their children; and I think the 'work experience' idea is a very useful way for managers to sample life at the sharp end of the school meals service."
