Dunton Folk - Two Fantastic Concerts

Author: Dunton Folk Published: 4th April 2013 10:00

Dunton Folk is proud to promote two very exciting concerts in April and May. On 20th April we have BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award winner Lucy Ward performing songs from her new album, Adelphi Has to Fly. on the 18th of May we have Life and Times performing their Treasures of the Heartlands.

Lucy Ward

Lucy Ward is an award winning 23 year old acoustic artist from Derby. She plays guitar, ukulele and concertina but considers her voice to be her first instrument.

After winning the Horizon Award for best newcomer at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Lucy's career has gone from strength to strength establishing herself as one of the hottest performers on the UK Folk scene, pulling a full capacity audience on her Cambridge Folk Festival debut. Recently, her name has appeared on the big screen - she wrote and performed the soundtrack for a new documentary film called Folie a Deux (directed by Kim Hopkins) which premiered in Amsterdam in November 2012.

Her debut album "Adelphi Has To Fly" was released in June 2011 by Navigator Records and was met with widespread critical acclaim both nationally and further afield. She was named by MOJO as ‘Britfolk's most vibrant and forthright new young talent' and attracted four star reviews from The Guardian and Maverick Magazine among others.
"Lucy, is a breath taking presence on stage. Her unpretentious outlook and warmth melts the hearts of audiences. Her disarming personality, pitch perfect delivery and the maturity of her songs can reduce an audience to tears, but a Lucy Ward set will always send you away feeling uplifted." Shrewsbury Folk Festival (2011)

After getting her first guitar at the age of 14, Lucy ventured into acoustic clubs, it was there that she first heard the traditional music that she now loves. Captured by the lyrics and stories of traditional song Lucy delved further into the world of folk music, visiting clubs and sessions up and down the country before getting booked to play gigs in her own right. In 2009 Lucy reached the final of the BBC Young Folk Award and she hasn't looked back since!

Life and Times

Life and Times are Graeme Meek (Guitar, Bouzouki, Vocals) and Barry Goodman (Melodeons, English Concertina, Vocals). Their music has taken them to most of the major folk festivals in England, and to folk clubs from Southampton to Hartlepool, Norwich to Bridgwater (and most places in between!). In recent years they have been resident performers at Hitchin Folk Club, itself established over 40 years! Life & Times won the FATEA Tradition 09 Award which is presented to the act that have traditional folk at the root of their sound and use it to inspire new songs, tunes and arrangements.

Life and Times' music has been featured on both national radio and local radio stations around Britain, and they recently recorded the title music for the award-nominated film The Bedfordshire Clanger. Graeme's songs have been taken up by a number of other singers, including John Kirkpatrick and Carolyn Robson, while Barry's tune, "Four Up" appears on Ashley Hutchings' Grandson of Morris On. Life and Times CDs include Charivari, Marston Vale and Where the Working Boats Went.

TREASURES OF THE HEARTLANDS

An insight in music, song and pictures into the little-known but fascinating characters, industries and customs of the county of Bedfordshire. Did you know that midsummer bonfires were once lit on Dunstable Downs? Do you know why Charles Wells gave up a promising career at sea to start his famous brewery? Or that mineral water was once produced in the town of Flitwick, and a highwayman called Henry Claydon once lived there? With Life and Times' performance of songs about Bedfordshire stories, customs and legends you will be informed, enlightened and entertained. Who knows..? You might even want to go there!

Both concerts start at 8.00pm. Tickets are available from Simon Bailes (01767 310 424) or Andy Barwell (01767 316 124) or on the door, price £10. Check out the Dunton Folk website www.duntonfolk.co.uk.
