Champion in winning form as Huntingdon races resume

Champion jump jockey Richard Johnson took a one-winner lead in this season's title race when he rode to victory at Huntingdon Racecourse's opening autumn fixture.

He partnered the Welsh-trained 9-4 favourite Akkapenko to a win in the second division of the MansionBet-sponsored handicap hurdle, while his chief rival Brian Hughes drew a blank from half a dozen rides at the meeting.

Conditional jockey Max Kendrick enjoyed the first double of his career when 12-1 chance Bentons Lad took the first division of the handicap hurdle and 22-1 shot Lovely Lou Lou - the longest-priced winner at Wednesday's meeting - landed the concluding National Hunt Flat Race.

The entire eight-race card was sponsored by MansionBet and there was one other successful favourite in the form of 11-8 fancy Golden Taipan - ridden by Paddy Brennan - in the two-mile novices' hurdle.

The Cambridgeshire track is owned by Jockey Club Racecourses and the group's ambassador Bryony Frost was on board the winner in the opener - a two-mile juvenile hurdle - Nordano at 9-1.

Northamptonshire trainer Caroline Bailey does well with her horses at Huntingdon and jockey Sean Bowen was successful with her 6-1 shot Elkstone in the two-and-a-half mile handicap chase.

Midlands handler Dan Skelton rarely leaves the track without a winner and this fixture was no exception as 8-1 chance Midnight Aurora, in the hands of his brother Harry, took the three-mile, one furlong handicap hurdle.

Brigadier Bob won the novices' handicap chase for trainer Kerry Lee at 9-1.

*Huntingdon Racecourse's next fixture is on Tuesday, 15th October. Tickets can be bought in advance at a discounted price of £10 at www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/huntingdon.
