Slovenian World Cup Gymnastics Tournament 2012

Louis SmithHuntingdon gymnast Louis Smith followed on from his European Championship success by maintaining his medal winning record at the prestigious Maribor Gymnastics Grand Prix, held in Slovenia last weekend. Olympic medal hopeful Smith, from Peterborough, managed to beat arch rival, Kristian Berki of Hungary, to take Silver in a closely fought Pommel final that saw Prasanth Sellathurai of Australia take the Gold by just over a tenth. Smith performed his new routine, the most difficult in the World, with a rating of 7.1 and a unique Triple Russian element that only He has shown in competition. Sellathurai capitalised on a small loss of form from Smith early on in the routine, but the British Squad member was happy with the outcome:
'This was my last International before the Games and I'm really happy to have finished ahead of Kristian Berki, and also to have performed my most difficult exercise at such a high level competition. Now there are just a few weeks of fine tuning before the British Championships, and the Big One at the end of July.'
Clubmate Dan Keatings had mixed fortunes, failing to qualify on Pommels and Parallel Bars due to falls in the routines, but making High Bar Final and finishing 5th in a World Class field. Keatings has been recovering from a long term injury and faces a tough few weeks where he has to impress the Olympic selectors at a Grand Prix in Belgium next week and the British Championships in Liverpool at the end of June.
* Huntingdon Gymnastics Club will be hosting an Awards Dinner on the 7th July, as well as welcoming the Olympic Torch relay to its doorstep the following morning. The evening meal, to be held at Wood Green Conference Centre, will provide a final opportunity to meet and mingle with Olympians Daniel Keatings, Louis Smith and Marissa King, before the preparation camps leading up to the London Games.
