Air Cadets on Parade for Armed Forces Day

Author: Laura Nixon Published: 2nd July 2012 20:55

On Sunday 1st July Wisbech Air Cadets and staff took part in the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Wisbech town centre.

In the morning the cadets the cadets ran a stall in town in order to recruit new members to the squadron. They also handed out paper airplanes and leaflets to members of the public.

Also a flag was raised to commemorate the event and this year the honour went to Cadet Corporal Kirsty Alderson aged 16. She raised the flag in front of the parade and the Commanding Officer, Flt Lt Steven Johnson took the salute.

In the afternoon a parade was held in the town centre. The band of Wisbech Squadron led the parade of cadet forces this year including Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets. The remainder of the Air Cadets marched behind the Commanding Officer of the squadron, Flight Lieutenant Steven Johnson.

The parade marched around the Market Square with the veterans watching from seats. Once the parade was in place a short prayer was said by Father Paul of St. Peter and St. Paul.

There was also a chance for the cadets to have a go on a Typhoon Flight simulator. This gave the cadets an idea as to what it would be like to fly a Typhoon and it was an experience that they enjoyed.

‘It was an interesting experience leading the parade through the centre of Wisbech' said Cadet Ross Chadney aged 15.

The whole event for Wisbech was organised by Jan and Ray Hutchinson, on behalf of Wisbech Town Council with the support of the Ministry of Defence Jan and Ray are both members of 272 (Wisbech) Squadron. The day was a success and the cadets and staff are both looking forward to next year's event.

The cadets have lots of up and coming events this summer like Summer Camp at RAF Cranwell.

Wisbech squadron are currently recruiting young people aged 13-17, come along to one of our parade nights on a Monday or a Thursday night at our Sandyland headquarters, email 272Sqn@BedsCambsWgATC.org or ring 01945 587251 on parade evenings.
