During National Allergy Week Allergy UK will be highlighting the misery that is caused to millions of people who suffer from allergy or hypersensitivity.
HAYFEVER is here but fortunately so are we! At this time of year our advice lines are inundated with people
needing advice on how to identify and manage their symptoms as sneezing, streaming eyes, coughing and
sleeplessness seriously impact all aspects of life.
We are able to provide advice and practical tips on managing hayfever and on the various treatments available. Importantly this year we are able to offer advice on which pharmacists are able to offer a proper
allergy screening service with full clinical history taken by a professional.
FACTS:
- 20% of the population suffer from Hayfever.
- 40% of children suffer from allergy.
- 25% of young people between the ages of 11 -21 suffer from Hayfever.
- Hayfever is responsible for a drop of at least one grade in examinations.
- 1 in 3 of the population suffers from allergy at some time in their life.
- Some foods cross react with pollen which can make hay fever worse.
During this year's National Allergy Week we will also be highlighting the problems of people with skin allergies and how these are affected by sunshine. As this year it is promised that we will have a high level of sunshine it means that for many allergy sufferers they are being promised a high level of misery!
Food Intolerance will also be covered as in summertime BBQs and picnics etc all bring added misery to those
with food sensitivities as they struggle to meet the demands of family and social life and deal with the
symptoms of their food sensitivities. Knowledge and management is the key and we will be highlighting the
tools that people need to achieve this.
Less well known allergies such as latex allergy will also be highlighted. This little discussed allergy is increasing in numbers and can be life threatening. Not only is latex used in a wide range of products it also cross reacts with certain foods and as latex allergy can be life threatening it makes daily life extremely difficult for sufferers who are of all ages.
