Lack of Sporting Fixtures Set to Hit Local Economies Hard

Published: 19th March 2020 13:43

Much has been spoken about the coronavirus outbreak and things that have been sacrificed because of it.

Much has been spoken about the coronavirus outbreak and things that have been sacrificed because of it. One of those is sport, with everything from grass roots games for children up to big money leagues such as the Premier League being suspended or cancelled all together.

The financial impact of this will push some smaller teams to the brink of collapse, and these are worrying times for the owners and fans of clubs in this position.

However, there is something else to worry about. At a time when businesses are likely to be hit hard, the lack of sporting fixtures could serve as a hammer blow for those who rely on them.

Bookmakers Set to Feel the Pinch

With little sport taking place, bookmakers are having a tough time. Local betting offices near to stadiums and arenas hosting sporting events would see a huge upturn in the number of bets they take on matchday.

These have now all gone. Those who accept bets online are also feeling it too, and if this goes on for a long period then the industry is going to suffer.

Online betting is surpassing that in shop, with more fans turning to it for the convenience factor. When sport does return, bookmakers will be hoping their old customers go back to them and place bets again.

This bet offers list from Thebookiesoffers.co.uk highlights offers and deals that are available with online bookmakers. These often prove to be fruitful for punters and offer a good start to a new account.

Bookmakers will be hoping that they can attract new business in through the offers they have available, and that people will bet on the limited sport that is currently available.

Hospitality Industry Set for Tough Times

Another industry ready to feel the rough end of this is the hospitality industry. This includes many pubs, bars and restaurants that will see a spike in trade around matchday.

Whether this is those that open for visiting fans, regulars for home fans or local eateries that benefit from the extra people in the area, all will feel this hard.

There is no doubt that this is going to be an incredibly tough time for them overall, but the impact of no sport is certainly a big part of that. Alongside sport, many other  local events are being cancelled as the country tries to fight this outbreak.

Close to the majority of football stadiums up and down the country there will be at least one pub that is generally quiet. However, on matchdays it comes to life, and the income from those days will be one of the main reasons that the pub manages to survive.

Hopefully those businesses remain nearby and when people are attending sporting fixtures again, their old customers will all return and spend money inside.

When Will Sport Return?

This is the biggest question of all right now, and one that no one knows the answer to.

We don’t currently have a date, other than sports saying that they will review things on a particular date. For football that is the beginning of April, but rugby union is already cancelled until the middle of April and horse racing off until the end of that month.

With no uniformity surrounding the date, it is hard for those watching to get any kind of grip on when we may see sport take place in this country again.

The one thing we know for certain is that no risks with health will be taken. Things will need to have cleared up considerably for sport to return, but who knows how long that is going to take as the coronavirus pandemic continues to grip the nation.
