The Most-Watched Broadcasts in British History

Published: 20th September 2019 19:42

TV series and films always get a great audience not just when they premiere, but several years after they’re released. It’s a known fact that Friends still has a growing fan base that binge-watch the series every chance they get. In the same way, Hollywood blockbusters are many people’s favourites no matter how many times they show them on the telly. Everyone likes a good film, but nothing’s exciting as watching your team play and screaming your lungs out when they score.

There have been many events that have gotten nationwide attention regardless if they were sports events or otherwise. Whether they’re happening once every few years of regularly here are some of the most popular events that were broadcasted in British History:

FIFA World Cup

Football is the most popular sport in Britain so it’s no surprise that it gets a huge audience. Britain is home to many football team and fans who always debate as to which team is best based on the team’s performance during a season. Although many games have a good number of people watching them no audience is as great when the World Cup is broadcasted even if the national team doesn’t qualify. Brits love their football and are patiently waiting for the next World Cup in 2020 that will be held in Qatar, a Muslim-majority country for the first time.

WTP UK

Although it isn’t a sport, poker is a popular game in the UK. The World Poker Tour is responsible for bringing some of the most interesting live poker events to the UK. One of the most memorable ones was in Season IX when Jake Cody became the youngest player to win the WPT London Main Event and bag £273, 783. There’s already a WTP going on right now, but it’s still early to see who’s got the best chance of winning.

Royal Weddings

Weddings are nice occasions when you get to see all your favourite family members. It’s a time to have fun and enjoy every moment of it. What makes people happy is watching the tape of it afterwards or the broadcast of a wedding. Since England is home to the royal family it’s only natural for a royal wedding to get nationwide and worldwide attention. Whether it’s Prince William and Kate Middleton or Prince Harry and Meghan Markle royal weddings will always get a huge audience around the world. The estimated number of viewers of Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding, around 750 million people, supports that fact.

The Olympic Games

Whether it’s the Summer or Winter Olympics, the Olympic Games will always have a person running to the nearest TV set at a pub or home. They’re one of the oldest sports and their popularity is high not just in the UK, but in the world as well. Whenever they’re on they get the attention of around 2 billion viewers worldwide. The next Summer Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
