How to Promote Your Business in Your Local Area

Published: 26th November 2019 09:43

You have started your business and whatever its nature, you need customers from the local area to come and buy what you are selling. You can easily build an armoury of tools that will help you promote your enterprise, for example modular stands, a very effective way to display information at presentations and trade fairs; start off relatively cheaply with one stand and build on this as your business expands. Here are a few more ways of growing your business locally.

Internet Presence

Create a website. Depending on the funds you have available, you might choose to pay for this to be done professionally. Alternatively, do it yourself; use one of the very good, free templates available over the Internet, easily accessed by googling website creator. Your website must be easy to navigate, informative and should carry your contact details, accessible by a click on the relevant piece of text. Ideally, it should also provide a page where customers can leave feedback.

Take time to learn about the Internet and how search engines work and getting your business to appear near the top when people search for the services you are offering. Register your business on Facebook and link it to your website to
promote your brand online. Use social media sites such as Twitter and register on Linkedin. These are great ways to interact and show you are serious about what you do.

Image

It is very important to create an image for your business that you can promote to customers by having an eye-catching logo. These can be very powerful, and people learn to recognise a business simply by its logo when no other clue to its identity is given.

Having an easily recognisable livery comprising particular colours and innovative designs is another great way of embedding what you are about in the minds of people you meet. To begin with none of this has to be expensive, it could be as simple as employees wearing the same coloured t-shirt with the company name, logo and contact details on.

Advertising

There are so many ways to advertise your business in the local area. Again, the amount of money you have available will determine what you can afford.
Taking an advert in your local paper, free community trade magazine or even your regional newspaper will always bring in customers. Try and get your local paper to do an interview with you. This would be a great opportunity to tell the public about what you are doing and why they should give you their custom.

Printing flyers about your business with your logo and contact details on and posting it through letter boxes can be done relatively cheaply. You can also put flyers on car windscreens, but make sure the car park you are targeting allows this. Adverts on local radio, bill board advertisements and promoting your business on the side of local buses are also great ways to attract customers, although they can be expensive.

Customize your vehicles

Customising your company cars and vans means that while ever they are on the road, they are promoting you. Think of some of the more familiar customised vehicles such as Eddie Stobart’s HGVs, Rington’s Tea or Domino’s Pizza vans. Customising vehicles is a great way of continually announcing your presence in the area.

Get yourself out there

There are several ways you can do this. Joining your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club or other local business orientated organisation is a chance to hobnob with the wider business community and distribute your business card. Attending trade fairs, having a stall at gala’s (even if you have to run a tombola) will give you the opportunity to talk to people and introduce them to your business. You could even offer a free gift. Even when the event is not strictly to promote business, such as a careers fair for sixth formers or students, it is worth attending. It shows that you care and want your business to give something back to the community.

Give something away

Running a free competition in a local newspaper is bound to attract the attention of people who may not usually give your enterprise a second look. Providing a worthwhile prize may be a little expensive but could pay dividends in terms of the business it brings you. Make sure the paper carries the details of the winner, together with you presenting them with the prize.
