Which Is the Best Roulette Variation to Play?

Published: 10th July 2019 15:42

Roulette is one of the most popular games you can play in an online casino. It is offered by every casino out there that has a Table Games section, so it’s incredibly easy to find and play it. However, there are many variations of roulette out there, so it is not very easy to choose which one to play.

The three most popular roulette games are European roulette, French roulette, and American roulette. These games are very similar to one another, but they also have some crucial differences. If you’re wondering which one you should play, keep reading.

We’ll compare these three iconic roulette games below and tell you what your choice should be.

European Roulette

European roulette is by far the most popular roulette variation of the three. For example, you can play it as online roulette on MegaCasino and similar online casinos, or in any land-based casino you can find.

This game is played on a wheel with 37 pockets. The wheel contains 36 black and red pockets and one green zero pocket. You’ll often see that European roulette tables have the wheel in the middle and two betting layouts on each side. Thus, more people can bet at the same time.

European roulette’s popularity stems from the fact that it has the simplest gameplay and the highest RTP, which are the two things that matter the most to players. The RTP in this game is 97.3%.

The betting system in this type of roulette is split into two groups: inside bets and outside bets. Inside bets bring higher wins because they are made on single numbers or smaller groups of numbers. On the other hand, outside bets are made on the properties of the numbers, so they are easier to win. For example, they allow you to bet whether the next number will be black, red, low, high, odd, even, and so on.

French Roulette

French Roulette is very similar to European roulette, but with some crucial differences. The design of the table is pretty much the same. The wheel is the same as in European roulette, with 37 pockets in total, including just one zero.

However, as you can expect from the name of the game, the bets on the table are written in French most of the time. Instead of red and black, you will often see French words Rouge and Noire

Moreover, the betting grid is slightly different as well, as some bets are located in different positions compared to European roulette. This is due to the fact that French roulette has two special bets. These are called “La Partage” and “En Prison.” We can compare them to the bonus features in online slots on Primeslots.com.

The first one returns half of the bet to the player when the ball lands on zero and they lose. The second one is a variation of the La Partage bet and allows you to recover your previous bet if you win the same bet in the second round.

The RTP in French Roulette is 97.3%. However, in some cases, thanks to the La Partage and En Prison bets, it goes as high as 98.65%.

American Roulette

As you can guess, American roulette is the most common variation in the United States. It is very similar to European roulette when it comes to the types of bets it offers. It has all the standard bets, minus the La Partage and En Prison bets found in French Roulette.

However, American roulette has one significant difference. Its wheel has 38 pockets in total because it has a zero pocket and a double zero pocket. This makes a significant dent in the RTP, so American roulette has as a Return to Player of just 94.74%.

Therefore, it is by far the worst variation you can play. If the casino you’re playing in does not offer the other two variations, you should forget about roulette completely. You’ll be much better off playing slot spinners, for example.

As you can see, there are no major differences between European and French roulette, but American roulette should be your last resort.
