William Hill Goes Completely Green

Published: 25th February 2021 12:19

Premier London-based brand William Hill has undertaken to ensure that 100% of its energy requirements in the United Kingdom will be supplied from renewable energy sources.

The move is part of the gambling operator's sustainability initiative drive that includes adopting a responsible culture throughout the organisation, making gambling safer for players, operating with integrity, and supporting the communities in which they operate.

William Hill is one of the biggest and most popular London-based brands in the iGaming industry with annual revenue of over £1-billion and employing over 11 000 people. It is known as a trend-setter, always offering top casino promo codes and other bonuses for its players.

To guarantee its power supply is 100% renewably-sourced, William Hill has taken all of its locations off the national electricity grid and switched to Total Gas and Power. Total is committed to generating energy from 100% renewable sources, including eco-energy from natural resources like the sun, ocean, and wind.

William Hill has signed a three-year fix-term deal with Total, so, aside from being good for the environment, it is also a great business decision because the company will no longer have to deal with variable and unpredictable energy bills, no matter what else happens in the market.

The brand will save around 61 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions across the 36-month deal, which is the equivalent usage of 38 000 cars or 16 667 flights from London to Las Vegas.

"We have prioritised the Environment as being extremely important to William Hill, and have committed to becoming a Carbon Neutral Business. We have established aggressive targets over five years in C02 reduction on energy, waste, transportation, and water," said David Medori, Chief Procurement Officer at William Hill. "All metrics are on target. We have an Environmental Management Forum for driving through key initiatives and ensuring these are on both operating and PLC Board agendas."

In addition to switching to green energy, William Hill will also be installing smart metering in all of its betting shops throughout the United Kingdom to track further and reduce unnecessary consumption and reduce their carbon footprint even further.

The news comes in the wake of what was an extraordinary year for the company in 2020. Fourth-quarter results show William Hill grew 9% year-on-year in the final quarter of 2020, with group sportsbook revenue increasing by a staggering 20%.

Overall, online international net revenue was up by 12% in 2020, while online UK net revenue was also up 5%. It was a challenging but successful year for the company. Its drive toward sustainability is part of ensuring the future will be just as bright for the company and its customers.

On top of that, William Hill has also committed to enriching the customer experience. The company made significant changes to its advertising messages, increased funding for research, education, and treatment of people who struggle with gambling, and even joined together with other notable brands in the industry to formulate a comprehensive programme to ensure a safer gambling environment.

"In this year of transition, it has been important to sustain the right culture as we reshape retail and integrate Mr. Green. As part of this focus, we have a compliance measure in our annual bonus plans for all of our leaders and we are the only operator to have a sustainability metric in our long-term incentive plan," William Hill states in its commitment to sustainability on its website.
