Whether you're a lifelong Londoner or visiting, the mere mention of the British capital is bound to draw up certain connotations. Some might think of the multiculturalism of the city, some might begin pondering the 2000-year history of London, while some might consider the fashion, arts, or nightlife on offer.

One major highlight of London that people easily forget is its position as one of the sporting capitals of the world, where some of the most important events in the history of numerous sports have taken place. While London is, of course, home to top-ranked Premier League football clubs and a former Olympic site, much of what makes London a true city of sport is its iconic and atmospheric sporting venues. Read on to find out which of London's sporting venues are most worth a visit.

1. Wimbledon

While there are other venues in the city that outrank Wimbledon in terms of size and fame, it comes in at the top spot simply for its centrality to the sport of tennis. As it's home to the world's oldest tennis tournament for 142 years, the creme de la creme of the sport have been flocking here every June and July to participate in the most important event in their calendar. The 16,000 seat Centre Court has seen some of the most important matches in history play out, with the likes of Serena Williams, Andy Murray, and Martina Navratilova gracing the court.

2. Wembley

Of all of the historic venues in London, Wembley Arena is the place to go for anyone wishing to watch football history take place. As well as hosting the 1966 World Cup Final that saw England beat West Germany, the 90,000 seat stadium regularly hosts the most important fixtures in the country. Those wanting to catch the FA Cup Finals next year will be able to do so at Wembley, where recent WiFi upgrades mean that spectators can now take part in live betting on their favourite online bookmaker site in real-time during the matches, which adds an extra layer of excitement to this atmospheric venue.

3. Twickenham

Rugby fans from across the world will agree that Twickenham is the spiritual home of this ancient sport, having regularly been the site of international matches since 1909. Known locally and internationally as 'the cabbage patch', Twickenham has hosted the Rugby World Cup Final twice and is even home to the World Rugby Union Museum. Even those who don't manage to bag a ticket at this 82,000 seat venue should pay a visit in homage to the sport.

4. Lord's

Definitely the most ornate of the venues on this list, Lord's Cricket Ground is another venue that is indisputably recognised as the veritable home of the sport it houses. Although the venue is located in a leafy corner of North West London, millions of people flock here every year when England is hosting touring teams throughout the season. It also holds the unique honour of being home to the oldest sports museum on the planet, which is packed full of memorabilia dedicated to the most English of all sports.

Any serious sporting fan should make sure that seeing an event at all of these historic venues is high up on the bucket list. You don't need a ticket to see the inside of any of them, so make sure to pop in on your next quiet Saturday.
