What is the Luckiest Region of the UK?

Statistics can bust myths or solidify them into facts.

Statistics can bust myths or solidify them into facts. Is lottery luck bound to geography? Many players believe so, and new data released by the UK National Lottery organizers show that indeed some regions of the UK are luckier than others.

So, maybe, the answer to all your jackpot dreams could be switching locations.

Birmingham is the luckiest lottery hotspot in the UK

Recent data by Camelot shows the B code is the most fortunate in the UK. The National Lottery has manufactured 5,500 new millionaires since its inception in 1994. Of this, figure 168 are from Birmingham. This region has also made 1,277 winners of £50,000 or more.

In 2001, Naylor and Rita went home with a cool 15.5 million on the Lotto Extra. Naylor has since amassed a vast collection of fast cars.

A syndicate of 10 persons from the Nicholl Grange Residential Home in West Bromwich won £1.9 million in Jan 2003.

In May 2003, bricklayers Radford John and Alf Cole from the Wordsley won £5.4 million.

Penelope Collins bagged £2.6 million in Nov 2004. She had purchased her winning ticket in Asda.

In 2006 Brenda Portch from the Kingswinford won 1.5 million pounds after following a horoscope prediction.

In September 2010, Phil and Sandra Sawyer from Shard End joined the league of millionaires when they won £2.6 million.

Mairie and Paul Kibler from the Bartley Green bagged £2million in 2012. The couple still insists on living a simple life despite their win.

Factory worker Paul Cole got lucky in 2014 when he won £1 million on the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle.

In April 2014 Colin and Brenda Roberts, an elderly couple from Great Barr won £4.3 million.

Dawn and Malcolm Bosworth made another million-pound history in 2015. They scooped £5.8million from the National lottery. Malcolm and his wife were just from holidaying in Turkey when they checked the numbers and realized they had won.

In 2019 Jodie Scullion joined the ranks of over 170 National Lottery millionaires in Birmingham when she won in an instant win game in October. Jodie tried out the Run For Your Money game on the phone just because she was bored, and then magically her £5 brought her £1m a few minutes later.

These lottery success stories are evidence of luck within the B code for believers. West Midland areas such as Litchfield also rank in Lottoland’s top ten list of the luckiest regions in the UK. But living out of these areas doesn’t mean that you are doomed as a player.

Even though the West Midlands has minted the most millionaires in the National Lottery, the area that has produced the most winners with huge prizes of more than £50,000 is Essex.

Therefore for players that want to win the lottery, Birmingham is the place to be, but for players that want to win big, Essex is calling.

Other luckiest areas for lottery players in the UK include:

Belfast

Belfast comes second in the National Lottery’s list of the most prosperous regions in the UK. The Northern Ireland region has created 133 millionaires since the inception of the lotto in November 1994.

A closer look at these figures shows that more than a quarter of the big winnings were in the past three years. Statistically speaking, Belfast produces a new millionaire every 32 days.

The Northern Ireland region is similarly the best postcode for those that wish to win £50,000. The area has ranked third in the UK for the past three years and sixth since 1994.  Every 11.6 days, one lotto player wins over £50k.

Glasgow

Glasgow is equally a lucky place for lottery winners. The city takes the lead as the luckiest in all of Scotland. More than 125 people from this area have been made millionaires since the inception of the National Lottery. These figures make Glasgow the third luckiest postcode in all of the UK.

Out of the said 125 winnings, 37 happened in the past five years. Better still, between 204 and 2016, Glasgow was in the lead as the UK’s luckiest lottery spot with 21 winners. Lottoland also found that Glasgowians aged 60 plus and named Barry or Claire happen to be the most fortunate in the city.

How far would you go to win the lottery? Would you relocate or change your name?
