Discover Cardiff’s top night spots this autumn

Published: 20th September 2019 18:46

Cardiff is a city with an intriguing history from a culture and leisure perspective. Back in the late 90s, it was as symbolic of Cool Britannia as Tony Blair and the Spice Girls. This was the setting for hot TV property such as the rebooted Dr Who and its spin off, Torchwood. Generation X set up home here, and there seemed to be a booming superclub on every corner.

That particular fashion has tailed off now, and like those Gen-Xers, Cardiff has matured. However, its nightlife has only got better and better with every passing year. If you’re planning on hitting the mean streets of Caerdydd, as it’s known to the locals, here are four very different venues that should definitely make your shortlist.

Les Croupiers

Cardiff has evolved almost beyond recognition over the past 40 years, and so has the casino industry, with its new wave of big name brands meeting the needs of those who want to play slots and table games either online or in the real world. Yet through all this upheaval, both in the surrounding city and in its industry environment, The Croups, as it is affectionately known, has been one of Cardiff’s most popular destinations for more than half a century.

It’s one of the largest independent casinos in the whole country, and when the city’s regeneration forced a move from the centre of town to a new site close to the stadium, the punters simply followed. You’ll find all the top games that you’d expect at any of the chains, including roulette, blackjack and craps. There are also more than 50 slot machines, and regular poker tournaments that cater to all abilities.

Ten Mill Lane

If you want evidence of just how Cardiff has grown up, look no further than this nightclub-cum-cocktail lounge in the city centre. It’s a haven for “professionals, personalities and society folk” who want to relax, wind down or dance the night away in sophisticated and discreet surroundings. The venue is open Wednesday to Sunday nights, and the music keeps playing till 6AM.

Buffalo

One of the best features of Cardiff over recent years is the emergence of hidden treasures that present a unique alternative to the chain pubs and bars you encounter in so many cities. Buffalo is a perfect example. Standing on the corner of Windsor Place, it could easily be mistaken for a private residence, or perhaps a solicitor’s office. But step inside, and you’ll find a welcoming bar with an eclectic range. From cocktails to craft beers to fine wines, there’s something for everyone. Buffalo also offers a tempting menu, and all items are created from locally sourced ingredients.

Clwb Ifor Bach

If you’ve a hankering for live music, then make a beeline for Womanby Street out towards the stadium. Club Ifor Bach is predominantly known for its great rock music, and you can catch some of the best home-grown acts around. Known as the Welsh Club, it also hosts regular dance music nights, so check their website to find out what’s happening and when.
