Its position as the highest restaurant - with rooms - on Exmoor National Park was one of the reasons that Head Chef Jack Scarterfield was keen to work at The Culbone.
Perched high up on the moors between Lynmouth and Porlock in West Somerset, this enviable location provides a bountiful natural larder which is showcased beautifully on The Culbone's new Food Safari's.
The award-winning beef served at the Culbone comes from ‘Big Red Cow' just down the road. Ruby Red Devon cattle, a traditional pedigree local breed bursting with flavour is produced by farmers Simon and Tracey David.
Tracey says "My father and grandfather farmed this breed here before us so we are keeping up that great tradition."
The Culbone's 2 night Food Safari features a morning visit to Red Cow Farm to meet Simon & Tracey and their herd. Guests will learn about how the team rear the award-winning cattle and visit the scenic National Trust Holnicote Estate on Exmoor National Park where they live. Later guests will return to The Culbone's new Cookery School room for a butchery and beef cooking masterclass from Jack Scarterfield. (2nts dinner, bed & breakfast and activities as above £240 per person).
Scarterfield, a local Somerset boy, has lived, trained and worked in London and Thailand before coming home. "The countryside here inspires me. The quality of the produce is really amazing and I believe the cattle are amongst the best in the country."
The 3 night Food Safari includes all of the above plus a day exploring the area's local freshwater fish. An expert Exmoor fisherman will take the group to the best fishing spots, depending on the time of the year and weather conditions, to catch their supper. Back at the Culbone Cookery School, Jack will deliver a masterclass in cooking with fish. (3nts dinner, bed& breakfast and activities as described £360 per person).
Groups will be no larger than eight people, and all guests will receive their own Culbone Apron, Recipe Cards & Recipe binder.
The Culbone has five comfortable en-suite guest rooms, and is perfectly situated for short breaks. The Exmoor area offers a whole range of outdoor activities including walking, cycling, and stargazing, and at The Culbone all of this is available on the doorstep.
