How The Internet Has Changed Our Homes

Published: 2nd April 2019 12:39

It’s no bold statement to say the Internet has completely changed the way we live our lives. Being connected at home has transformed many things, not least for being able to browse and have all the information we could possibly need at the tip of our fingers.

It’s no bold statement to say the Internet has completely changed the way we live our lives. Being connected at home has transformed many things, not least for being able to browse and have all the information we could possibly need at the tip of our fingers.

But what are the main ways in which we have benefited, so much so it would be unthinkable to live without it?

Entertainment Central

Remember the days of just a few channels on our television set? Perhaps those evenings where you had to visit a bingo hall to have a night out with friends.

Today, the Internet has made our home a real hub of entertainment, with hundreds of channels and on demand services available through our TVs and tablets.

Equally, we now have online casinos and bingo services, meaning there’s no need to head into Nottingham or Leicester for a night out, you can get the same experience with a night in on the sofa.

It’s safe to say that online gambling is booming and gradually removing the need for land based casinos. Gaming is a huge industry thanks to the Internet, with the best bingo apps and websites offering more varied gaming than you’d get in your local town or city.

A recent study has forecasted growth of 19% for mobile gambling from by 2021, as more
gamers are opting to gamble on the go.

The report also details the ongoing predominance of sports betting, with 54% of the market betting in this vertical over casino, bingo and other types of gambling.

Shopping on the Sofa

The high street hasn’t been the same since the growth of online shopping, and that’s because the convenience to buy online is huge and has completely transformed a customer’s experience.

We are now so used to buying groceries, clothes, technology and much more online with some companies now offering same day delivery!

Of course, it’s had an adverse effect on the high street. Nottingham lost 35 stores in just six months last year, but ultimately that’s because how we shop has changed thanks to the Internet.

Smart Living

Smart living is really beginning to take off and is completely changing how we live at home. You can get smart devices for many different things these days, all aimed to make living more convenient and in many cases save you money and energy.

Home hubs are becoming increasingly popular and essentially operate as a home assistant, allowing you to order your weekly shop, play music, switch on and off appliances and more.

On top of that you can now buy thermostats you can operate with your phone, allowing you to be much smarter about your energy consumption and ultimately save you money.

Improve Your Home Office

One of the main things the Internet largely improves is the ability to work from home.

More and more people now work from home and with faster internet speeds and the ability to email, video call and more you can communicate just as well as being in the office.

Not only that, it’s opened up workers in the East Midlands to the rest of the world, giving us the chance to conference call eastern China and beyond.

With the smart tech available in our home on top of this, working from home is one of the biggest changes we have benefited from the rise of the Internet in our homes.

As this technology opens up more doors, that’s only going to increase and 2019 will likely be another incredible year for how we use the Internet in our homes.
