The Five Most Traditional British Summer Holiday Games

Summertime is upon us. Schools out and it’s time for family holidays up and down the country.
The British Summer holiday is steeped in tradition from eating fish and chips on the pier to a quick paddle in the sea. In a world of video games and social media though, we also shouldn’t forget the traditional games that were once, and still are, played in seaside towns and gardens across the nation.
We decided to take a dip into nostalgia and bring you five of the most traditional summer games in Britain...
Bingo
Bingo is in fact as popular as it’s ever been thanks to the thousands upon thousands of adults that play every day online.
Popular sites such as Ted Bingo continue to thrive with all singing, all dancing games. But it’s beginnings are a little more humble and to this day you can still head down to the promenade or into the on-site clubhouse for a game of bingo.
In the likes of Blackpool and Brighton there are dozens of small bingo halls around and this summer they’ll once again be filling up as adults take their weekend breaks.
Cricket
Nothing beats a game of beach cricket and this year they’ll be more wickets at the seaside and in parks than there have been for generations thanks to England’s recent World Cup win.
It’s a game that has been around for centuries and perfect for all the family, whether it be small children or grandparents.
You’ll find the game on many old postcards and it’s a sport which is going to see plenty of kids pretending to be their heroes across the next few months.
Boules
Boules is a fantastic travel game as all you really need is six to eight balls and a jack, the small target ball in which you’re required to aim for.
You can pick up sets for next to nothing and they’re ideal for slipping into a picnic basket, with families doing so for generations.
It can be played by anyone and can be played anywhere which is perhaps what makes it one of the favoured games among British families every summer.
Quoits
Quoits is similar in the fact that all you need is a small set that can be carried around with ease.
The game involves throwing hoops over a set of spikes/poles, with various poles offering different points dependent on their difficulty.
It’s another game that can be played anywhere and will always be one of the more traditional games that can keep the whole family entertained.
Penny Arcade
Speaking of which, nothing quite beats the thrill of the 2p machines! These arcade machines have sat on the end of British piers for dozens upon dozens of summers yet the never tire. To this day adults can still be seen sat beside their child with buckets of 2ps and that’ll pass on to the next generation.
The sound of pennies jangling is a noise that almost defines the British seaside and creates memories that last a lifetime.
You can spend all the millions in the world creating a PlayStation game, but sometimes all you really need is a handful of copper and a small £2 toy sitting precariously on a cliff top of 2ps.
