Manchester Girls Rugby Presentations & Awards

Author: manchestergirlsrugby Published: 6th July 2009 20:54

The curtain on Manchester Girls Rugby 2008/09 season came down at the Players Presentations in the Grove Park clubhouse on Sunday.

Girls' Team Coach Diane Fantom congratulated the girls on their successes in both the North West U15 Girls Merit League (runners up and highest scorers), and also at the recent Manchester Youth Games, where Manchester Rugby Club had provided the team which represented Stockport all the way through to the final.

The positive attitude of the Under 15 girls under the leadership of captain Rebecca Scholes was evident all season. That attitude has led to the Club now registering two age groups, U15 and U18, who will play competitive girls rugby in 2009/10.

The players' presentations provided a unique double for sisters Jess and Hannah Johnson.

Jess Johnson (pictured in action against Liverpool St Helens) was pleased to have been voted the Players' Player of the Season, with her team mates recognising her enthusiasm and willingness to play in any position from hooker to wing, sometimes in the same match!! In fact the presentation of the award was one of the few times this season when Jess was lost for words. This didn't go unnoticed as Diane had already wondered in her introduction whether "Ever Ready" had an off switch...

Before announcing the Coaches' Player of the Year, Diane made it clear that this was not an award made simply to the highest scorer. However that achievement was added to when Hannah Johnson  was presented with the coaches' award to cap an impressive season. Next year the sisters will be separated in their age groups as Hannah moves up to the new U18 side.

The small core of players who had put in a season long effort were deserving of special mention, and Diane was pleased to announce Amber Smith as winner of the award for the Most Consistent and Reliable Player of 2008/09. Amber played in every game of the campaign and was a key player in the Manchester pack, deserving of the award for her effort and some strong performances.

Diane was optimistic that some of the 2008/09 U15 Girls team would be able to follow one of Manchester's former junior players to representative honours. This season, Harriet Mills, a former junior at the club, was capped for England U20s (whilst still 18), scoring a try against Wales on her debut.

Any girls up to the age of 18 interested in playing rugby in an encouraging and successful environment would be welcomed, and should ring coach Diane Fantom on 07833 948358 or email manchestergirlsrugby@google.mail.com for details.
