Manchester Girls Rugby Squad Get Ready for the New Season

Author: manchestergirlsrugby Published: 21st August 2009 15:07

With Manchester having decided to field girls' teams at two age groups in 2009/2010, it was hoped that all players would return for the new season, but most never actually went away!

Last season's Under 15 squad closed the season out with a fun team building day at the ‘Go Ape' centre in Delamere Forest. Since then they have kept together through the pre-season by carrying on with their Tuesday evening training sessions at the Grove Park ground.

During the pre-season, the girls have joined in with Manchester's well established Womens XV at their fitness training. These have been held come rain or shine, and more often rain this year of course. The Womens XV and last season's Girls U15s have trained well together and the senior team's support has been appreciated by the girls and their coaches.

This has strengthened the feeling that Manchester Rugby Club can become a focal point for Womens and Girls ruby in the area. The formation of a new Under 18s team for next season will provide the player development link from the existing Under 15s side through to senior rugby, whether that is direct to Manchester's Womens XV or via the many Universities that now field their own teams for female students.

A number of last year's squad have been nominated to join the Cheshire county training sessions in October, whilst U15 players Rebecca Scholes (Fly half and Captain) and Emily Houghton (Centre) have also been selected for places at the prestigious RFU School of Rugby.

This season is an excellent time for any girls new to the sport to get involved at Manchester Rugby Club. New players are welcomed as the Club has registered a second age group in the North West Merit League.

The girls are coached in a safe and encouraging environment by girls coach Diane Fantom who would be delighted to welcome anyone to the Tuesday evening sessions. Girls up to Year 10 can play U15 rugby; girls in Year 11 and sixth form college as well as school leavers are currently needed to help form the new U18 side.

Any girls up to the age of 18 interested in playing rugby would be welcomed, and should ring coach Diane Fantom on 07833 948358 or email manchestergirlsrugby@googlemail.com for details.
