|Author: Mike Edwards||Published: 12th October 2010 08:14|
The sixth in a series of articles by Mike Edwards of The Tutors, relating to the Wirral LEA 11+ Method & Technique Course.
Up to around 2004 The Wirral LEA set 11+ Selection tests with fifteen question types, then six additional types were created.
Some publishers do not include the additional six types. It is important to find an author who does cover the full range of questions and, for the Wirral, ensure that they are similar to the NFER question set. Remember that Wirral LEA only set Verbal Reasoning questions any mathematics and logic are contained within the question types
Question Type 15 Reading Information
Question type 15 does not fit into the format of other questions.
Most tutors generally advise parents to leave these questions until last because of the time needed to complete some of them. However, due to the wide variance in the question type some of them are less complex than others.
For this set of questions the example questions are also the sample questions.
Lauren, Kieran, Ben, Lewis and Daisy go to an electric shop.
Lauren, Kieran and Lewis buy DVDs.
Lewis buys a console game.
Daisy does not like classical music, she buys two CDs.
Ben and Lauren buy a book each.
Kieran buys a book but not a console game.
Who purchases the least number of items?
Place each of the children into a list, abbreviating the names to save time.
Read the question again, one statement at a time. At the end of each statement insert a mark against the name of the child for each product purchased.
La % %
Ki % %
Le % %
Da % %
The correct answer is Ben.
Lauren, Kieran and Benjamin have to be at judo club for 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Benjamin is never late for judo club. On Thursday Kieran was late for judo club.
Only one of the following statements is true.
A Lauren is sometimes late for judo club
B Kieran sometimes arrives after Benjamin
C Lauren sometimes arrives after Benjamin
D Kieran always arrives after Lauren
E Lauren is never late for judo club
The answer comes from what we are told, not from what you assume.
You need to read down the list of options until you find the only answer that can be correct based on the information you are given.
A Lauren is sometimes late for judo club.
You do not know this from the information provided
B Kieran sometimes arrives after Benjamin.
You know that Benjamin is never late.
You know that Kieran was late on Thursday.
Therefore this statement is correct
Lauren, Kieran, Ben, Lewis and Daisy are 8, 7, 6, 6 and 5, but not necessarily in that order.
Lauren is 2 years younger than Lewis.
Kieran is 2 years younger than Ben.
Daisy is older than Lauren.
Who are the twins?
You need to follow a logic process for this question based onn what you do know and what you do not know from the information provided.
Lauren must be 5 or 6 years old
Lewis must be 7 or 8 years old
Kieran must be 5 or 6 years old
Ben must be 7 or 8 years old
Daisy is 6, 7 or 8 years old
Lewis and Ben are either 7 or 8 years old
Therefore Daisy must be 6
Lauren must be 5, because she is younger than Daisy
If Lauren is 5 then Lewis is 7
If Lewis is 7 then Ben is 8
If Ben is 8 then Kieran is 6
You can now see that Kieran and Daisy are the twins.
As you can see from the above example the questions vary widly and you need to find practice material that does cover a good range of questions.
