Neston Village Fair 2012

Published: 18th June 2013 08:30

Neston was blessed with an unexpected but very welcome day of sunshine for the annual Village Fair.

Mrs Marie Hughes and Rev'd Neill Robb.

Up until the last minute it had been feared that the persistent rain of the past few weeks would put more than a damper on this much-loved community event.  However,  brollies and long faces were swapped for suncream and smiles as the sun shone down on Comrades Field.

A few adjustments had to be made to the traditional start of the Fair this year.  The cost of having the police close the roads in the town centre for the Classic Car Cavalcade was too high, at nearly £700, for the not-for-profit Village Fair coffers.  The cars still set off from URC as usual, just without thepolice escort, and having to wait for passing traffic at the Cross.  One car carried the Mayor of Neston, Cllr Pat Hughes and his wife, Mrs Marie Hughes, and another ferryied the Rose Queen and her attendants - Abbie Cannon, Katerina Hardie and Alice Lang from Parkgate Primary School.

Mud prevented the cars from progressing onto the main part of the field, so the Mayor and Rose Queen and their companions made their way on foot to the stage where the Fair was officially opened by Cllr Hughes and the Queen crowned by Mrs Hughes.

A presentation was made by Lynne Vaughan of the Village Fair Committee to Rev'd Neill Robb who is retiring later this month.  She thanked him, and his wife Marlene, for their generosity in sharing their home and access to the field each year for the Fair, and spoke for all of us when she said how much they would be missed.

It is estimated that around 2,500 people attended the Olympic-themed Fair, enjoying a wide range of entertainment, including: the Moreton Girls' and Boys' Brigade Band (Wirral Sound); Neston Primary and Woodfall Primary School Choirs; A Radio Play by Neston Players; Hip & Harmony Street Dancers; Neston Primary Country Dancers, Neston Theatre School's Little Actors performances; the CH64 Community A capella Singers and more.

for Neston's Got Talent.

One of the highlights of the Fair was, once again, the finals of Neston's Got Talent.  Eight acts performed brilliantly in front of both an audience and three judges - Cllr Dean Munday (Neston Town Council), Ruth Hall (E.R.I.I.C) and Louise Irvine (Sainsbury's).  An online vote on AboutMyArea/NESTON attracted well over 150 votes.  These were added to the judges' votes on the day and saw the winners honours going to Keeley and Callum Cartledge (Winners, Age 14+) and Neave Diamond (Winner, Age 5-13).  Second place went to Chelsea Holroyd ((14+) and Lauren Mealor (5-13).

All the acts were congratulated on reaching the finals and all were given a certificate and a cash prize.  Sainsbury's in Neston sponsored the prize pot.

As ever, there were numerous stalls for Fair-goers to visit, with many local community organisations taking the opportunity to tell people about their activities and to raise funds.

Brand new this year was a Barfly Velcro Wall, sponsored by Lookers of Ellesmere Port, and the 'Queen' was in attendance courtesy of CAN Group, who also provided a bouncy castle and face-painting, along with delivery of the Snug play equipment which was thoroughly enjoyed by lots of younger children.

Like the Lone Ranger without Tonto, I was bereft without Linda Pelling who had an important family event to attend on the day.  However, I would like to thank the following people for sharing their photographs with us: Bernard Rose, Ken Rose, Martin Barker, David Sejrup and Jamie Collins.

Here are just a few of the photos from the day to whet your appetite.  A full gallery of shots will be added in the next couple of days, so please check back.
