"Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries." - Ann Herbert
Neston Library is situated on Parkgate Road just down from the cross. It is free to become a member and you can join in person or online. We offer local and virtual access to a wealth of resources. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always here to help you find books or information.
NESTON LIBRARY NOW OPENS AT 9 a.m. MONDAY to FRIDAY, to allow greater access to all our services.
You can now access Cheshire West Council Services here through the Customer Services staff at the Library, from council tax and housing benefit advice to parking permits. We also have a new state of the art iConnect Video Kiosk which enables you to speak directly to a Customer Advisor at the Customer Contact Centre in Winsford. You can even apply for a Blue Badge or Concessionary Travel Pass here.
The Plus Dane Housing Officer for Neston is now based at the library. Plus Dane hold rent surgeries every Thursday for tenants.
Neston Library may have been built in 1907 but we have changed a lot since then. (It is the last remaining Carnegie library in Cheshire and was built thanks to the generosity of Andrew Carnegie ‘the patron saint of libraries' and the dedication of local people.)
We have recently had self-service machines installed, which use RFID technology. This means we can spend more time helping our users and running activities such as reading groups, storytimes, class visits and local history sessions. We have a huge number of online services which you can access from your home 24 hours a day, such as a new music streaming and information library called Naxos. Our latest service is OneClick Digital which enables you to download audiobooks free! We hope to have e-books very soon...
We have,of course, a brilliant range of books for all ages and tastes, with friendly skilled staff who will help find the right book for you, whether it's the latest bestseller or that quirky little gem.
If you want to find out about Neston we have a fascinating local history library which includes the collection of the late David Scott and lots of old photographs of the area.
2014 is a very special year for the people of Neston and nationally. June 2014 sees the Bi-Centenary of Ladies Day and the Neston Female Society. 2014 is also the Centenary of the outbreak of World War I. The library will be holding special events and exhibitions to mark these momentous occasions. We also hold a huge amount of information to help you research special events. Please come in and find out what is going on.
As a library member you are entitled to free computer access for up to an hour every day which includes use of all our e-Resources. Subscriptions include Ancestry.com (library edition), Which? Online, Theory Test Pro and The Times Digital Archive. For those who need extra help with computers we have IT Buddies on hand Monday, Wednesday & Thursday 10 - 12, Friday 5.30 - 7. We also regularly run taster courses for IT and Family History. We have the latest releases on DVD, Wii and Nintendo DS and every Tuesday and Friday between 5.30 and 6.30 pm is ‘Happy Hour' with 2 for 1 hire on all CDs, DVDs, Games and Talking Books (cheapest item free).
There is always something going at the library, whether it is storytime, author visits, poetry evenings, live music or murder! During the school holidays there are activities for children from storytellers and dragons, to meeting snakes and tarantulas, to treasure hunts and Wii competitions. Every summer we take part in the Summer Reading Challenge and we think Neston still holds the record in Cheshire for the number of children taking part, with around 500 each year. We love stories and we always celebrate World Book Day with local schools - any excuse to dress up and have fun! This year by special invitation Mr and Mrs Twit (courtesy of Roald Dahl) entertained 3 or 4 classes of children every day throughout the week beginning 4th March. The Twits were on their best behaviour (hard to believe I know) and read the children some of their favourite stories and showed them around the library. One little girl was very disappointed we hadn't been able to get ‘One Direction' here as well for the occasion.
The library has a very active Friends group who always welcome new members. They put on a wide variety of events throughout the year as well as looking after the sensory garden and Centenary mosaic. The Friends usually meet monthly in the library. We also have a Family History group who meet on the 3rd Friday of the month.

Friends of Neston Library
The Friends of Neston Library are a group of volunteers who meet regularly to discuss ways to promote events at the library, to support the activities of the library, and to keep the library gardens in bloom. The group was originally formed to support the Library Centenary year in 2007, which culminated in the installation of a fabulous mosaic outside the building, depicting various scenes in the local area. A red-brick plinth has now been constructed to support the mosaic so that it can be properly displayed and viewed. Images taken from the mosaic form the banner seen on many of AboutMyArea's pages.
The objective of the group going forward is to give members of the community the opportunity to feel some ownership of the library and to help organise events for the benefit of the wider community.
