NC&YC - The Background

Published: 11th March 2009 14:27

The Story

The new centre was conceived by Neston Community Youth Centre (NCYC - a registered charity) and Neston Market Town Initiative (NMTI). NCYC had a building byond economic repair and the MTI sought to develop a lifelong learning centre which would also provide modern facilities for the community.  NCYC could not find funding for a Youth Club and could not sustain one even if it found the funding to build it.  The MTI could not find a suitable site for development. The solution seemed obvious - this multi-purpose centre.

West Cheshire College and Lifelong Learning Departments of Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council (EPNBC) and Cheshire County Council (CCC) were consulted about what they needed from the new building.  Neston Young People's Consultation Team was commissioned by Project Rural Matters (PRM) and Cheshire Youth Services to collate the views of young people about their requirements.

The cost of the building was met by grants from EPNBC (£620,000) and the NorthWest Regional Development Agency (£485,000).  Fitting out of the Youth Zone is being paid for by Connexions (£15,500) and the rest of the Centre received a grant of £45,000 from Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN). Start-up working capital was provided by Project Rural Matters from funds derived from Cheshire Constabulary.  The first two years of the Centre Manager's salary is to be paid by a grant from the Fair Share Trust. Thereafter the centre will be self-sustaining.

This project has been made possible by the agencies and organisations mentioned above, as well as the many hours of hard work carried out by the Board of NCYC Ltd, all of whom are volunteers.
