In speeches, both Paul Davies and Keith Butcher explained that the opportunity to redevelop the site of the old youth club in Burton Road had been presented by the Neston Market Town Initiative, through funding from the North West Development Agency (NWDA) and Ellesmere Port & Neston Borough Council. Particular thanks were extended to both these organisations for their tremendous support through a sometimes very difficult process, as at one stage the project was in serious jeopardy following the collapse of the construction company who were originally contracted to build the Centre.
Acknowledgement was also made of the support of WREN, Fairshare and local organisations such as Project Rural Matters, Neston & District Chamber of Trade and the Rotary Club.
During the planning of the Centre, a Youth Consultation took place to ensure that the facilities for young people would be what they themselves wished to see, and has resulted in an impressive Youth Zone which is already providing activities on three nights a week, with over 70 young people already attending.
Zoe Burnett, representing the young people who took part in the consultation, presented flowers to the Mayoress and to Joan Joynson of NC&YC Ltd. She also gave a short speech to thank everyone for all their support in bringing the Centre into existence for the young people of the Neston area.
The Centre will also provide life-long learning opportunities and rooms are available to hire for meetings, clubs and other activities.
Current courses include: Languages (such as French, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese & Spanish); Computing; Flower arranging; Deaf Awareness and BSL1 Communication Tactics. (See our link at the bottom of this page for more information).
The Youth Zone is currently open on Monday and Tuesday evenings 6.30-9pm and on Friday evenings from 7-9pm. In addition, the Little Actors Youth Theatre meet at NCYC on Wednesdays from 5-7pm.
