Neston High supports Operation Christmas Child

Published: 17th December 2009 10:33

Students and staff at Neston High School have once again been busy filling shoe boxes as part of Operation Christmas Child.

Neston High Shoebox AppealThere was an overwhelming response with almost 200 boxes collected, which were carefully created by both individual students and tutor groups together. Members of Willaston Methodist Chapel also kindly donated a number of boxes to help with the appeal.

The boxes were collected at the start of December and taken to the depot in Birkenhead. Staff were delighted to be able to take ten students over to Woodside to see the boxes being prepared for their journey to Romania and other parts of Eastern Europe. Students were able to speak to people who had experienced the joy of distributing boxes to children in need around the world.

The visit was a great opportunity for the students to see the next stage of the shoeboxes' journey and also how so many volunteers give up their time to pack hundreds and thousands of boxes to make a total of 10,000 boxes from the Wirral alone.

This year there will be 40,000 boxes sent from the North West with 2 million from the UK.

The students who went to Woodside said: "The shoebox appeal is hard work but worth while. People give up a lot of time and care in to doing the boxes and it can change peoples' lives forever."

"I really enjoyed learning how happy it makes the children and I enjoyed helping to pack the boxes at the depot."

"I have learnt that so much love and attention is put into these boxes for the needy children in different countries."

"I learnt that there is an awful amount of work involved with the shoebox appeal but it all goes to a good cause. I had a unique insight of the children the boxes were sent to."

The appeal has been a fantastic way of students remembering those who are less fortunate as they develop their moral and global awareness of the world in which we live. All of the students involved formed a human chain from Senior Deputy Headteacher Mrs Hudson's office to the reception area from where they were collected.

Mrs Hudson said: "It was great to see so many students involved and also the local community. I am always
extremely humbled when I receive the boxes and see the thoughtfulness and generosity of everyone at this special time of year. The boxes are a credit to the students of Neston High School and we look forward to an even bigger appeal next year."

At the depot, the students saw how boys aged 0 -4 and 11 -14 are often not the most popular choice for many and so next year, the school intends to have a campaign encouraging people to prepare boxes for these particular age groups.
