Neston's Stephen Whitaker Wins Counterpoint Quiz

Published: 16th December 2014 10:02

Local resident Stephen Whitaker has triumphed in the final of a nationwide radio competition.

Neston's Stephen Whitaker wins Radio 4's Counterpoint QuizStephen (right) pictured receiving his trophy from the quiz host, Paul Gambaccini.

As reported on AboutMyArea earlier this month, Stephen, of Bridge Street, Neston, competed in the BBC Radio 4 quiz Counterpoint, which seeks to find the station's musical mastermind.

After 13 weeks of pitting his musical wits against other contestants, Stephen eventually emerged as this year's champion in the Final broadcast on Monday December 15.

The show had actually been taped a week or so beforehand, so the secret of his win had to be held close until after the broadcast.

The quiz is hosted by veteran broadcaster Paul Gambaccini and covers a broad range of musical genres, from classic to film scores and pop.

Congratulations Stephen!

Very well done.

I listen to this show regularly, and it is tough, then add the nerve factor, and Stephen is a worthy winner.

Thanks John, I was certainly a bag of nerves throughout, hence my rather shell-shocked scowl in the photo. That's me thinking 'can we get this over with so that I can have a stiff drink as soon as possible'.

What a privilege Steve, for you to meet Gambol

I hope he didn’t catch any grabs!
