Neston shoppers out in force as ALDI opens its doors
Published: 22nd October 2009 11:12 |
A sigh of relief could be heard in Neston today, as ALDI finally opened its doors.
Shoppers in Neston have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the store since the closure of Somerfield on the same site in May this year.
Whilst Neston is well served by local butchers (Hamilton Barnes, Tracey's Food Hall), a greengrocers (Goulbournes) and two bakers (Marietos and Gerrards), along with gift shops (TIG, Temptations) and various service outlets, residents wishing to do a full week's shopping including household items have been forced out of town for the past six months, as the hard-working staff at Neston's small Tesco and Iceland branches struggled to cope with demand.
Now it is hoped that not only local residents but many people from further afield will be tempted back into Neston Town Centre to shop and enjoy the town's numerous pubs and restaurants.

The new ALDI, one of the larger branches in the North West, was officially opened this morning by Councillor Moira Andrews, Chairman of Neston Town Council, who welcomed the opening of the store as "another gateway to a new era for Neston," as it comes hot on the heels of the inauguration of the new Council and ahead of the opening of Sainsburys in 2010.
The first 500 shoppers were treated to a free chocolate cake, and were invited to enter a prize draw to win a range of prizes valued at over £800.00.
ALDI are also generously sponsoring this year's Neston Christmas Festival by offering a laptop computer as first prize in the Late Night Shopping Prize Draw on Friday December 4th.
Also on hand this morning to join the celebrations was a team from Claire House Children's Hospice, who brought along their mascot, Claire Bear, to raise awareness of their forthcoming "Light For Love" event on November 29th.

On making enquiries this week at Aldi I have been told that Aldi bring in there own staff, one employee comes from Widnes and others from outside CH64 However as an ex Somerfield employee myself, I made Two applications for a job at the new store along with the over 200 applications from within CH64 that were sent to Aldi, not one person has been invited for an interview that I know of in CH64 They do not want any local people, that`s why they advertised the the vacancies out of the area. They don`t mind taking our money but they won`t offer us a job, there is a lot of people in Ch64 out of work and Aldi could of put a few of them in employment at the new store, but there you go that`s life and we have to accept it, or do we?
