Tesco and the University of Liverpool have celebrated the first anniversary of the Tesco Dairy Centre of Excellence by officially opening the new Visitor Centre at Wood Park Farm in Neston.

The farm is part of the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG), which aims to ensure both economic and environmentally sustainable dairying in the UK, and as the Centre of Excellence within the group, Wood Park Farm hosts research and training events.  The 200-strong dairy cow farm is owned by the veterinary faculty of the University.

The new Visitor Centre is an old dairy building, converted into classrooms and changing areas, and will host both training events for farmers and school visits.

The centre was formally opened by David Wood of Tesco, who used the opportunity to present prizes to some members of TSDG for their achievements at the farm over the past year - including Dr Rob Smith (Head of the University's Livestock Health and Welfare Division) and John Cameron (Wood Park Farm Manager).

The Tesco Dairy Centre of Excellence was officially opened in January 2009 by Lucy Neville-Rolfe (Tesco Board Director) who said: "It has quickly established itself as a valuable asset for the dairy industry.

"Research carried out at the centre will make a real difference to the welfare of herds and the competitiveness of the dairy industry. In this coming year, the research at the centre will focus on reducing the environmental impact of milk production."
