Community Involvement
A talk by David Johnson of the Parkgate Society.
Volunteers are encouraged to take part in more frequent litter
picks to help with the Parkgate Vision.
Part of the Vision for Parkgate is to enter Parkgate in the Cheshire Community Pride Competition in 2016. Two years ago the judges said Parkgate was scruffy. There was scaffolding at Mostyn House School, poor benches at the Donkey Stand, a café open spasmodically, a smelly bus shelter, and weeds and trees growing in the sea wall.
Parkgate, as a coastal resort, attracts visitors, and hence litter, traffic and parking problems. David dislikes the weeds and crumbling mortar in the sea wall, and rubbish in the marsh and the verges of Boathouse Lane.
David suggested we could do litter picks on the Parade, Boathouse Lane and the marsh. Many businesses already clean outside their premises, but the gardens around the Old Quay pub need attention. David's comment that Streetscene do a good job cleaning up, including weekends, drew applause.
Residents could cut hedges that overhang pavements. We need new signs at the approaches to Parkgate and the old baths. Some street lights on the Parade could be replaced with heritage style. Anybody with a spare boat might donate it for the middle slip. An information board by the Boathouse is planned. Hanging baskets on railings and in Mostyn Square would look good.
Renovations carried out for the new Elephant Lounge & Bar
have improved the look of The Parade.
On a positive note, the Donkey Stand is looking good, as is the newly painted Red Lion with hanging baskets, the new Elephant Coffee, and St Thomas' Church.
David ended by suggesting that we might raise funds and apply for grants.
In questions, we learned that lottery funding had been unsuccessful, but a New Homes Bonus would be available. The owner of Mr Chow's Chinese Eating House and the Parkgate Take Away said he was improving the premises, but it would take time. There is a now Parkgate Traders Society, which might help.
